I spent the weekend with the awesome regala_electra and we watched movies and Farscape and did our nails, then had a pillow fight plotted out our genderfuck fic. Which I was hopelessly sent into embarassing laughing fits over because... well, that would be spoiling it. She said it much better than I ever could. I can't waaaait.

Oh, Alec, so cute, all young and clean-shaven and shaggy-haired.

It's kind of funny how un-Dean-like Jensen looks as Alec -- you wouldn't think there would be that much surface difference, as they're both snarky and smirky and dorky and scowly, not to mention both being raised as soldiers and all that, but they're actually really different. I mean, you can tell it's the same actor and all, but I would never look at an out-of-context picture of Alec and think, "Dean!" It's a whole different vibe. (Alec -->standing about / Dean --> lurking ...?) Hard to define, though -- something about Alec's newness to the wide world and his slowly changing "me first!" attitude... versus Dean's seen-it-all-and-then-some look, and his deeply rooted "family first, then innocents, then finally if there's time, me." The way Alec takes pleasure in the world wherever he finds it because he's just discovered, whoa, pleasure! I like it! Give me more! Whereas Dean takes pleasure where he finds it because he knows it's all he's gonna get.

Not that I'm fascinated by Jensen playing bad boys with hearts o' gold, or anything.

Analyze away! :) I love your take on the differences though. I think having watched DA I appreciate Dean more. They're not the same characters but in a way it's like I incorporate Alec into Dean canon. Alec sort of represents the opposite of Dean, what Dean could have been but isn't (at least, the real world version maybe rather than Dean's take like in What Is And What Should Never Be). What Dean could be if he didn't make the same decisions or have to watch over Sam. Or maybe I just like watching Alec do certain things and then see Dean be a dork at times and go "ahaha, Alec would do that!" only not. Maybe when it comes to food

It also reminds me of the few Alec & Dean fics I've found and the balance of power/relationship they have (where Dean thinks of Alec as younger and more inexperienced, naturally).

And my babble boils down to Alec = awesome. As is the shaggy hair, I approve!
