On Saturday night I went along with
raelala,
regala_electra,
starstillwonder, and
vorpal_pen to see Evil Dead: The Musical for Ashlyn's birthday. And it was fucking FANTASTIC.
Before we went to the show we had dinner with
siryn99 and Ashlyn's roomates, only I did not drink because drinks and I don't mix, so I had my Coca Cola and all was good. AND I got to talk to
michelish, which was fun, although Rae was obviously evil for her phone call of terror. Heh.
I watched the trilogy in advance for the show -- which is both fun and necessary otherwise it just seems like musical crack, but added knowledge makes it fun in-jokes, references, cool lines musical crack. The use of stage set and design was amazing, as were the songs. I have a hard time picking my favorite as they all had cute puns and curses but it might be
What The Fuck Was That? which basically consisted of Ash and Scott singing about killing a Deadite, every other line being, "What the fuck was that?" but... all tango-y. The best part of the song was when they embrace and then ask "What the fuck was thaaat?" BWAH. Yeah, my mind? Went there, and wants Ash/Scott slash. It's terrible, and I was only drunk on life and Coca Cola.
Do The Necronomicon was hilarious and catchy, as was
Housewares Employee (though that's from the original run in Canada; it's funnier now because he gives her the necklace with her head facing his crotch, expecting something else. See what awesome crack this is?!). It's not a big budget but that was part of its charm: for the bridge scenes, they had this cute little two feet high bridge and when it was broken, it was just covered in Caution yellow tape. Eee. And yes, there's a Splatter Zone for the first three rows, which is cool for later on in the play as the audience gets drenched with fake blood. Thankfully, we were not in the Splatter Zone. But still hilarious and cool.
Every time they said one of the famous movie lines the audience went ballistic, of course. The Boomstick speech was recited by all by heart. Heeeee. Army Of Darkness was referenced as "another story" as they couldn't fit it in (they really combined both Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn well) as were the original director and actor with a nod towards Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.
Unfortunately, the show we went to appears to be the last one in NYC as they're closing due to poor ticket sales, but I am VERY happy we got to see it before it closed! And I fangirled like an idiot and got a picture and autograph from Ryan Ward (Ash) who looks very Bruce Campbell-y, so I'm good for the next year. Poor guy. Did two shows and he must have been very tired, but he still came out to talk to the fans. :) There are pictures of the show
here on its MySpace site as well as videos I think. I hope it gets picked up again!
And then I went to Rae's and there were inappropriate manips of me plastered on the walls with a number of superheroes as well as cake. So. That was also of the good. It was a joint birthday celebration of sorts for
regala_electra,
vorpal_pen, and myself (on February 16th, 17th, and 21st respectively) and I had a lovely time and I thaaaank Ashlyn profusely for coming up with the musical idea. You two birthday girls are amazingly talented and witty and I'm very lucky to have you both as friends. As are the other girls involved in our lovefest festivities. :)
Catching up with Supernatural is still slow going but I had to cheat and watch Tall Tales on account of the squee.
I think Sam doing the jealous lover bit with Dean in the bar totally confirmed 100% and solidified the fact that I need to catch up with this show ASAP. Jensen Ackles, too. Fucking hell, it's too much. In a good way, I think. Methinks that subconsciously putting Sam and Dean after a post concerning Ash is letting me know that this needs to happen, and probably has already. Hell, Bruce has
commented on the show. It's late and I should go to bed before having delusions of grandeur.
