Companion [LJ] Fics: Comfort.
Summary: Nabi reminisces about her and Taemin's relationship.

Nabi pulled the shoebox into her lap as she got comfortable on the couch. She smiled to herself as she set the lid aside. She went through the items inside, unable to stop herself from smiling.
“Hey, that’s me,” Taemin blurted out cutely, taking a seat in front of her on the other end of the couch. He picked up a few of the things. One particular photo made his nose twist up a little, “I forgot I tried going blonde.”

She glanced up at him from a strip of negatives, ruffling his hair, “It was cute though.”

His cheeks tinted a light pink and he smiled brightly, “What’re you doing anyway?”

“The day we met was stuck in my head, so I was trying to see if I had any pictures or something from then.”

“You don’t remember how we met,” he questioned with a pout.

She giggled and poked his cheeks, “How could I forget?”

Nabi had been dragged out of bed by her friends, and quite forcefully, to be honest. She crashed onto the floor and then stood up, rubbing her sore butt. She was about to whine and complain about her sleep being ruined, but she realized that it would be futile upon seeing her roommates gathered around her with various makeover items. One held a couple of different outfits and pairs of shoes, one held her blow-dryer and straightening iron, and the last held the makeup chest shared by the four of them. She backed away but was quickly tugged into the powder room of their apartment.

“You’re going out with us tonight whether you like it or not,” the oldest of the four of them, Juliet, stated matter-of-factly as she began to blow dry the younger’s hair.

Nabi caught Raven’s nod from the corner of the powder room as she went through the outfits she’d pulled out of Nabi’s closet.

Sunmin, the youngest, set the makeup chest on the vanity and began going through the various shades of eyeliner, lipstick, and eye shadow.

Thirty minutes later, the girls’ “project” was done. “Look in the mirror already,” Sunmin bounced excitedly, clasping her hands together. Nabi took a deep breath and did as she was told. She turned and looked in the mirror and couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face.

“She likes! Mission accomplished! Let’s go,” Juliet exclaimed, hurrying out of the powder room to grab her shoes.

Raven hugged Nabi, “You look pretty. Let’s go have fun, okay?”

Nabi couldn’t help but to smile again. She nodded, hooking arms with the older girl and leaving the apartment with the rest of them.

~~~
The four girls wandered the streets, looking for any place that caught their attention. They weren’t girls that enjoyed clubs and big party scenes. They went for more of the bonfires and the kind of parties thrown in parking lots.
“There’s one!” The youngest chirped, taking off in her wedged sneakers. The older three laughed to themselves, following after her.
They walked up to the group of cars parked in a usually desolate parking lot. Someone’s car was blasting the kind of music that just makes you smile and sway along. Everyone seemed to doing just that as well as singing along and laughing. A few were playing with water guns, a couple of guys throwing a football, another set of them tossing a Frisbee, and some other were roasting hot dogs and marshmallows and making s’mores over a makeshift bonfire off to the side of the cars.
Nabi sang along to the song playing, swinging her hips a little and smiling to herself. She noticed the cooler and made her way over to fetch a drink. Just as she reached it, someone sat down on top of it.
He looked up at her and smiled sweetly, “You have to pay one dollar to get something to drink.”
“Is this cooler even yours,” she teased, crossing her arms at her chest.
He let out a cute, airy laugh and shook his head, “No, it’s my brother’s, but still.”
“Well, I didn’t bring any money with me,” she smiled, deciding to play along, “How can I get a free one?”
His expression seemed to grow serious as he thought it over. It almost seemed as if his ears perked up when the song playing changed.
“Dance with me,” he finally answered, smiling.
“Reasonable deal for a bottle of water,” she smiled back, following along with him when he took her hand.
The two danced and sang along to the music, unable to stop themselves from smiling and getting lost in the melody.
Nabi smiled and tugged at his shirt once the fourth song was playing, “I’m really thirsty now.” She laughed herself, walking back over to the cooler with him.
He opened it for her, “Pick your poison.”
“People usually say that when they have alcohol.”
“Oh… Right... I don’t carry that,” he paused, “So, pick your hydration.”
Nabi covered her mouth and giggled, pulling out a water bottle. He got himself lemonade and closed the cooler. This time she sat on it.
“Who gave you permission?”
She stuck her tongue out at him, grinning, “I do what I want.”
He grinned and patted the top of her head, “If that’s what you want to believe.”
“Don’t you patronize me, mister.”
“My name’s not ‘mister,’ stranger. It’s Taemin.”
“Well, Taemin, my name isn’t stranger, but you can call me Nabi.”
“Nabi? Like butterfly?” She nodded. “Why don’t I get to know you’re real name?”
“Because that’s what I legally changed my name to. I like it better.”
“I think you’re just some secret agent that doesn’t want to tell the truth.”
She poked his side, laughing when he did, “Does that worry you? Should I be arresting you for something?”
“Taemin’s a good boy,” he replied, putting on his cutest expression.
Nabi smiled and nodded, “You seem like a good boy.” She didn’t catch his blush since she looked up at the sky instead.
The sun had set completely now and the stars stood prominent against the dark sky. He slid her over to the edge of the cooler, so he could sit next to her. She smiled to herself and rested her head against his shoulder, leaving him to smile as well.
The night seemed to pass by quickly. When it came time to say goodbye, neither Taemin nor Nabi wanted to.
They didn’t.
Everything was packed up and gone. The two climbed in the backseat of his brother’s convertible. Neither of them heard their friends calling them to leave or, soon, the muttered goodbyes. They stared up at the sky until, eventually, they both fell asleep.
~~~

“I found one,” Taemin blurted out, snapping her out of her memory.

He held up one photo and showed her before reaching into the box and finding another. She held onto his wrists and he set down the photos. He looked at her curiously, wondering if he’d done something wrong. She let go of his wrists to cup his cheeks, she smiled and pressed her lips to his. He kissed back and smiled softly.

“Nabi-“

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”
