Not that you guys read and/ or respond to my posts (although I know some of you do and I appreciate it!), but I am working on a repertoire finding assignment, and my question is this
( Read more... )
Morten Lauridsen's "Fire Songs" and "Lux Aeterna" Lauridsen is just beautiful. "Lux Aeterna" is a bit more accessible, but the chords in the fire songs are so... gah, so tight! I wish I'd gotten to sing the whole cycle.
Samuel Barber's "Agnus Dei," to the setting of his "Adagio for Strings." Hitting the climax of that in a choir of 120 people for the first time, when I didn't KNOW what the other parts were going to do, was... what made me decide that, "Y'know, maybe singing for the rest of my life would be a good idea."
Vivaldi's "Gloria." Just a fun, easy piece of music in my opinion, but also one of the first ones that got to me.
Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms." One of my favorite bits of music ever. I love the use of the different voice parts to achieve different effects, while also providing such a challenge. I've gotten to do it as soprano I, II, and alto II, plus the female solos, and each part needs to be sung in its own unique way. There's also some pieces of "Mass" that would stand-alone quite well ("Almighty Father" comes readily to mind), not to mention the more popular stuff from "Candide" or whatever....
... and shit, so much more, but those are what came to mind. If you respond at all, I'll actually go dig out my archives and see what else. Are you looking for larger works, or individual songs? I can list what my favorites are of what I know and why, but a bit more detail about what sort of groups might be performing would be helpful. And I keep a LOT of music, so I have publisher's info and preview-copies available, plus a number of my favorites I have on CD somewhere....
I know, this is your bailiwick, but I can definitely give you ideas. Let me know what you need/want.
Thank you!! No, I am all about getting familiar with more choral works. At the moment, I am looking at High School accessible stuff, so nothing too big. But if you have a moment to look through your collection and type up a list of pieces & composers, I would definitely use it. You are awesome! :)
