WARNING: Overly meta-ish response! ^___~

Newbies are representative of change and that can be both a good and a bad thing; on the one hand, when you've got a fandom set up already and you're comfortable (or at least familiar) with it, you don't want anyone coming in and fiddling with it, but on the other hand, if nothing ever changes in it then that fandom will stagnate and it won't be any fun anymore.

What's interesting about the new Star Trek movie, though, SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE is that it's an alternate reality to the original series--the movie is a new and separate canon that branches from the original. The characters in the '09 movie are different people than the characters from the show; they've been shaped by different experiences and can go in different directions than the originals, which some pre-existing fans will embrace (because they see it as liberating--it enables people to play with the characters in a new context) and some will reject (because they're not interested in canon alternate reality versions of the characters). END SPOILERS

I used to watch The Next Generation with my mom when I was a kid, though I barely remember anything about it now. Like you said, that can be awesome because there's so much canon to go through if I'm interested--but, conversely, THAT'S A LOT OF CANON! It can be a bit overwhelming when you're just starting out and there's so much canon and fanon available. I guess that's why I'm attracted to the '09 movieverse--it's as new as I am; focusing only on that canon gives me a measure of control.

LMAO, Spock's speech patterns are so unusually correct; fortunately, whenever I had Spock say something that sounded ridiculous, I also had Kirk there to tell him, "Dude, that sounds ridiculous." LOL! ^___^

UM. SORRY FOR ASSAULTING YOU WITH SURPRISE META!
