{EIGHTEEN} I Indeed Can See But The Question Is Can You See Me

He stirred his coffee as she continued to stare at him. This was going to be civil, if it happens. If she's the woman he knows she is, she'll want answers. She needs them. As he takes a drink from the warm liquid he feels her cloud his vision. "Dr. Burke." She poured some coffee into her cup. "Dr. Yang." he acknowledged. No eye contact, no need for it. "Would you like to join me for a walk?" He turned to her. She seemed to lose some tension. "Yes, Dr. Bu.... Preston." Her lips tilt up in the tiniest expression.

~~~
She took his hand and put back his ring, and hers. She kissed it and put his hand on her small but growing belly. "Feel that? It's going to be here waiting for you. Okay?," her voice quivered, her free hand brushing off a tear. "Well I guess you heard, sensed, whatever. Burke's here, he's.. he came back Derek. He says he thinks he can help, he knows a doctor in Chicago and well, I want to transfer you there.. I mean.. there's not much here, no one knows what to do.. they say that nothing can be done. But Richard says it's a bad move to have you transfered with your condition. Tell me what to do? Please. Give me a sign." She pleaded, her long red hair practically able to tap her belly.
~~~

They sat in silence, not a word since they started walking. Christina was about to drink until she put her cup back down. She stood up straight, her head slightly tilted upward. Her eyes reflected black from the lights inside the hospital. He waited patiently.

"Your apartments' red now. It's evil, I'm evil, you've turned me evil-evil into a little evil woman who hates the smell of open heart surgery!" she winced. He held back a laugh. "You're not evil. Not even close." he sat on the nearest bench. "You're right. You're evil." she stated. He pondered to what he would reply. "Christina, I'm.." She looked at him, "What? Sorry? That's just a five letter word it doesn't change anything and it's useless to even compare to what happened." Bitter, and she wasn't ashamed of that. "I never wanted to leave." he whispered. "Yeah, well you did." a sigh escaped her lips. "There's no turning back time, you can't fix something just because it's the noble thing to do. The right thing to do. I can thank you for opening my eyes to what I already knew." Christina's eyes were dense as she spoke and he could tell she meant every word. "I never meant to hurt you. I did what you would have done. I should have never asked you to be something you didn't want to be." "I never asked for you to care. I never wanted anyone to care, I could take care of myself, I was strong and focused. You can't give me back what you took away. So don't just sit there expecting a gold star for you apologizing your own regrets. I don't need comfort and I don't need you anymore." She got up and left, entering the hospital.

~~~
She sat drinking hot chocolate, savoring the taste and not letting the fact that Derek was not home get to her. She even had to make her own cake, he wasn't there when she woke up, didn't see him when she was with her patients and around the hospital. Didn't even say happy birthday. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't hear someone let themselves in.
"Age does nothing to you. You're more beautiful than you've ever been." Mark hid his arms behind him. She let it slide that he let himself in without knocking. She gave a fake smile, "Thank you." It pained him to see her so down. He walked up to her and sneaked in a kiss on her lips. She tried to shrug off the sparks that appeared when her eyes closed. The feeling of satisfaction giving off a sense of emotion from someone who actually cared. "I've been pondering on this for a long time. I knew it was just for you." His arms appeared from behind him back and she gasped at the sight. "Oh Mark!" she took the tiny kitten in her hands. Tears fell as she snuggled it lovingly to her chest. "She's beautiful!" her face glowed. She put the tiny kitty on the floor and it wandered in her new surroundings. Mark was mesmerized by her and when she hugged him he couldn't take it anymore. His face rested on her cheek and he moved in slowly, thanking God that she didn't pull away. She melted in his arms when his lips pressed to hers. They both jumped when the door slammed.
She bolted to the other side of the kitchen. "God! Addison! Addison.. I need a drink. The most horrible thing happened to.." He turned his head which filled with questions at who he saw. "Mark. What are you doing here?" Addison darkened in her heart. "I came by looking for you." Mark finally said. "Huh. Interesting. I think I know what's going on here." Derek snapped. "Derek it.." Addison was silenced when a smile appeared across her husband's face. "You made cake didn't you! I can smell it! Thank you honey." He kissed her on the cheek and then attempted to jump up and down like a child. Mark's glare could probably punch Derek in the face if Mark looked hard enough.
~~~

Addison opened the door to her house and spun her arms around the area. "This is it." her lips turned up in a tiny smile. "It's nice." Burke replied. He had convinced her to leave Derek's bedside for awhile so she could get away from there. You know, different surroundings, the bright sun that shined on the water that filled the earth so near by. "I have an extra room, so.. you can settle in." she added. He nodded slowly, "Really? Thanks." She gave a full smile. "No trouble at all."

He came back down when he was finished unpacking. She was standing motionless near the kitchen window. He cleared his throat and she turned, a weak smile on her lips. She motioned outside the window, "Nice huh?" He nodded, "Different. Definitley different." She walked to the other side of the counter and picked up the mail, looking through them. "So where'd you" she stopped abruptly. He was right there when she took in an unsteady breath, moving her hand to the left side of her belly. "Oh God." she half laughed. "Look here feel this." she took his hand and placed it with her own. He let out a genuine smile, one that he felt deep inside. The little taps made him think about himself. His life. His dreams. Christina. Meanwhile Addison's smile was fading. She had pictured a time like this, the wholeness of having a living being inside of her, with her husband to share. And here it was. Her moment. Yet her husband would never get this time back. He would never feel his daughter or son moving and never feel the magic inside his breath that tickled like soft static. The joy, the blessing. She blinked and looked up to Burke, his eyes were different. He was different. Breathing inward, catching a breath and his lips turning up into a bigger smile every time he felt the baby kick. She felt comforted, for the doubts she had been thinking, this.. her and Burke, was right.
