Summary: Jensen knew that Jared was Sandy's. He fell in love with him anyway.
Notes: I would like to state for the record that I'm ecstatic that Jared and Sandy are engaged. My enormous tinhat aside, they are such an adorable couple and I hope they'll be very happy. As recently as a day ago I said I wasn't going to touch this subject with a ten foot pole, but here I am anyway. Title from "One of These Days" by Smalltown Poets.
Jensen’s known from the day they met that Jared is Sandy’s. Even as they hit it off like they’d known each other forever instead of twenty minutes, Jared couldn’t stop talking about his girl and how awesome she was. That’s never changed. So yeah, Jensen knew that Jared was off limits. He fell in love with him anyway.
In his more melodramatic moments he thinks maybe it happened the moment they met. But even more realistically, he was gone beyond redemption by the time they finished filming the pilot.
He’s never told Jared, of course. It would fuck everything up and make things awkward, so he just keeps quiet. He also keeps his distance. Everyone including Jared thinks it’s just his personality. He’s shyer and more reserved than Jared. Who isn’t? But that’s not really it.
In public and in private, Jared’s all over him like some bizarre extra appendage, no respect for personal space. It makes it so hard to remember he’s not allowed to touch. Not like that. The only way he manages is by holding himself stiff. Keeping some vestige of his bubble around him, even when Jared’s climbing him like a tree. Gradually he gets better at faking it, looking like he’s not about to crawl out of his skin, but inside nothing changes.
Now Jared and Sandy are engaged. It’s not like it’s a surprise or something. And wow, Jensen could have sworn he wasn’t holding onto any hope, had never been, but if that’s true he’s got no reason to feel like he’s been punched in the gut. Which he does. Shit.
He’s happy for them, he really is. Jensen has never been the type to look at an impossible situation and think he can change it. He doesn’t feel like he has any claim on Jared, but he loves him and it hurts like an open wound. When you love somebody though, really love them, you want them to be happy, even if it’s not with you.
So when Jared walks onto the set, his normally blinding grin now rivaling the power of the sun, and says, “I’m engaged, man!” Jensen smiles back, genuine if bittersweet, and claps his best friend on the back.
“Congratulations, Jay.”
