For the record, the sewer scene was from the book. Like, spot-on, near-drowning-in-a-lake-of-underground-sewage-in-really-graphic-detail from the book. And Marius's wounds did fester...there was mention of gratuitous bleached bandages to fight the raging infections.
There was a quite a lot added from the book, actually! It made my Lit major heart very happy. The vocals were disappointingly week, but I'm not sure I blame the extreeeeeme closeups so much as the recorded-on-site nature of the singing
The only thing that really, really put me off was Javert's Unnecessarily Crunchy Suicide which will be the name of my metal band someday. The scene stops being reflective and pitiful when you hear Javert's body go CRUNCH and you sit there going "NO NO THAT'S THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING!"
...well, that scene, and cutting Grantaire's verse from "Drink With Me." As much as I appreciated Grantaire and Enjolras dying together, it meant less without more buildup than a few significant glances on Grantaire's part. But Grantaire! Yes, he was much too pretty! Agewise I think he's supposed to be 25 or 27...he mentions being the same age as another Ami, and I think that one's age was given as 27, but the only physical description given of him is "particularly ugly."
...I haven't had a proper conversation about Les Mis with anybody yet. T-T The extent of it has been, and I quote, "Wasn't that guy who played the guy who the girl loved but he was in love with the other girl soooo hot? Like I mean soooo hot." And that was from my 45-year-old coworker.
