She was still upset and slightly frightened (but no longer surprised) by the screams that occasionally woke her up. By now she knew them to be the realization of nightmares suffered by her teammate.
She could still remember the first time she heard them, when they were still just genin. And they bothered her just as much (if not more) now as when she awoke thinking they were being attacked.
The only difference was that now she could do something to quiet them. She crawled out of her bed, careful not to disturb the rest of her sleeping team (it was then that she realized the screams she had grown so used to hearing were actually nothing more than muffled weeping coupled with occasional moans and gasps; and she wondered why they seemed so loud to her). Quietly she made her way to where he had tangled himself in his blankets.
She sat down beside him and pulled his head into her lap, careful not to wake him so she could stroke his hair while the fingers of her other hand intertwined with his. As she did this she felt him tense before he relaxed and was quiet for a moment.
Then she cringed nearly as much as he did when he let out a sudden sob that shook both their bodies. And as she felt him calm, still unconscious, she thought of how much easier it had become to comfort him like this over the years. How close they must be that he could relax to her touch, even in sleep.
It wasn’t long before she calmed as well and exhaustion began to take its toll on her. Silently moving to lie down beside him she kept his hand in her own and promised herself she would not fall asleep holding him this time.
But it was too easy to fall asleep (like she found herself doing now) when she was next to him. It was because they were family, because they loved each other; when he was upset, even if he wasn’t aware, she was upset, and when she held him, it made them both feel better.
He never remembered this time they spent together, or if he did he never mentioned it (it wouldn’t be like him if he did). And even though he was probably suspicious the mornings he woke up to find her asleep next to him, he would only carry her back to her own place before she or anyone else woke up. She never remembered how she got back to her own bed, or if she did she never mentioned it, because she knew it wouldn’t be like him to want her to.
I was trying to be all artsy. I had a specific pair in mind, but I kept it general to fit all you pairing wants. If someone guesses who I was thinking of I'll, um..... well... I guess I won't do anything really, but it'd be kinda cool anyway.
