What an adventurous weekend I had! It was basically just me sitting around trying to listen to the new Coldplay, listening to The White Stripes, watching Angel, and hanging out with Kevin who was staying at my house over the weekend. Why all this sitting around pray tell? Oh, I dunno, maybe Kevin ran over my foot? It was on Thursday night and we'd been out drinking at a bachelor party in the city. We were both plastered and had mistakenly done shots of well whis(uc)key. He had to move his car, and apparently my foot wanted to make the road a little bumpy. Fucker hurts. Went to the ER at Woodhall Hospital, which I won't even grace with such a title as "Hospital." Nasty place, gunshot wounds, crazy homeless people with to much green stuff coming out of their leg wounds, etc., etc. But, amazingly, nothing was broken, only one of my pairs of jeans...
On Saturday I left the house and headed to the Bowery Ballroom and met up with Nina, where we caught The Dears show, with The Shout Out Louds and Marjorie Fair opening. All three acts were fantastic. Best all around show in a while, it's rare that I like all three bands on a bill. I knew all the music already for every band as well, so it was fun singing along the whole time. Plus I got great new t-shirts and pins. Nina was awesome, a little drunk when we met up but we had a fantastic evening and I met some of her new friends. That girl rocks so hard, glad to have such a good friend. She agreed that I did the right thing, breaking up with Jamie, which was nice of her.
On Sunday Jacob and I went out hunting for an air conditioner. After a little shopping around, and three hours of installation, we were sitting cool in our comfy little apartment. Love it.
Okay, I know some kids really like the new Coldplay album. I love Coldplay, I saw them many years ago in a tiny venue in Denver, CO. with only about 30 people in attendance, before their first album had been released. Long time fan. With that said, the new album is a massive disappointment. The songs rarely take off the ground in the first half, it sounds like the same song for a half hour. There a a couple good choruses in that 30 minutes, along with Fix You, which is really nice. The rest of the album just sounds like he's singing all the same lyrics. Coldplay always had simple, honest lyrics, yes, but these are extremely MOR. It's not godawful. But it's not great either. I know Coldplay and this just feels like they weren't inspired and were bored. I told my dad and brother that if it had come out a few weeks earlier, right when I broke up with Jamie, that I'd probably have loved it. Yes, I've decided that this is Coldplay defining themeselves as a VH1 band (they were already pretty much there). They wrote Clocks 11 times over and stripped out the good parts, then named it X&Y. It hurts 'cos they were awesome, and I hope they have an amazing album left in them, but this album screams otherwise. I know some of my friends are digging it, but I'll pass. Eventhough I will continue listening to it, just hoping that I'm wrong, or that I'll connect to it. I can even admit that down in there somewhere I like it, just because I really was looking forward to it. This album is good for people in the middle of a break up and for pregnant women. Oasis kicked Coldplay's ass this year. No contest. The White Stripes new album has me so excited, best since De Stjill (sp?). And even more astonishing, I'm listening to the new double album from Foo Fighters and I'm loving it! I've been a fan of them for some time but didn't connect completely with their last two efforts. Teh new album is their best since The Colour and The Shape. The downtempo disc (two) is beautiful. Colplay could take a hint from the ballad numbers on disc two.
