Chapter 2

The beginning of  a journey

“So, you are going to Japan?"

"Yeah. Seems like that, ummi*," Salsabila replied to her mother, Mrs. Fatima. "Why? Can't I go?"

"It's not that. But..." Mrs. Fatima didn't finish her word.

"I know. It's too far, right?" Salsabila guessed. "Come on, ummi. I'm not a small kid anymore. I promise to protect myself and will not influenced by the environment," she convinced her mother. "Moreover, this chance only once in a lifetime," she continued.

Mrs. Fatima smiled. "Who say that I’m going to prevent you from participating in the festival? Actually, I’m proud of you."

“Why?” Salsabila put on a blur face. She pretended to know nothing.

“Become the presenter of the country is not a simple task. Not everybody could do it or had a chance to do it,” Mrs. Fatima explained. The smile on her lip widened. “Moreover, I know that you’re a noble and good girl who will never forget about your root and culture.”

“Thank you, ummi. Syukran*,” Salsabila hugged her mother tightly. “Love you.” She kissed her mother’s cheek.

“Love you too,” Mrs. Fatima replied. “If you continue hugging me, how am I going to cook the dinner?” she asked her daughter. Salsabila released her arms from her mother’s shoulder. She blushed.

“Don’t forget to cook sambal*. I won’t get it there,” Salsabila told her mother.

“Of course, I’ll cook it. There’ll be tasteless without it. By the way, when will your flight?”

“Let me see. The festival started on Sunday. So, the flight is on Friday’s night.”

“It’s only two days left before you departed. How long will you be there?”

“Around a week”

“I’m going to miss you.”

“Miss you too,” Salsabila put on her-little-child-expression face. “I want to pack my luggage so I’ll go inside first,” Salsabila asked permission from Mrs. Fatima. Her mother nodded her head and went to the kitchen.

Salsabila opened her room’s door. It was a little mess. She stepped inside the room and took out her trolley bag from the cupboard. She put it on the floor and opened it. Then, she took out some clothes and put them inside the bag neatly. Suddenly, she remembered how this journey started.

It was a month ago and she was studying in her class.

“Excuse me, Teacher Suhana wants to see Salsabila and Dini,” a boy told my Additional Mathematics teacher. After conveying the message, he went to his class back.

“Okay, you may go,” the teacher told us.

“Why teacher Suhana wants to see us?” Dini asked me on our way to the teachers’ room.

Salsabila lifted her shoulder, “I don’t know.”

“Good morning, teacher. Why do you want to see us?” Salsabila asked politely.

“Oh, it’s about the Physics competition that you won recently. I just got a call from the Ministry of Education and they want to send you to the 'International Science Festival for High School Student' held in Osaka, Japan as the presenters from Malaysia,” teacher Suhana ended her long explanation. The two girls looked at each other with their shock-and-don’t-know-what-to-say expression on their face.

“It is true?” they asked chorusly.

“Of course, it’s true. How could I be kidding in this important matter?” teacher Suhana replied. She already predicted their reaction just now. She smiled. “I’ll be going with you too. All the expenses such as the tickets, accommodation, food and passports are sponsored by the government. So, no need to worry about it. Anything else to ask?” she asked her students.

The girls remain silent. “If nothing, you can go back to your class.”

“Thank you, teacher.”

“I still can’t believe it. It’s like a dream,” Salsabila said to her friend as they got out of the teachers’ room. She nearly shouted.

“Me too,” Dini said, agreeing with her friend. “By the way, going to Japan is your dream right?”

“Of course,” Salsabila replied shortly. Her mind already imagined how the journey will be. She smiled out of sudden.

“Why are you smiling?” Dini asked. Salsabila kept smiling.

“I know. You’re dreaming about him right?” Dini knew that Salsabila is a fangirl over a boy Japanese pop group. She had mentioned about it for many times.

“If you meet him, what will you do?” Dini continued asking her friend.

“Why should I tell you?” Salsabila replied, showing her it’s-my-secret face. “Well, actually I myself don’t know what to do,” she ended up laughing.

“Kak Long*, let’s eat together. The dinner is ready,” the call by her little sister woke Salsabila from her daydreaming. Salsabila looked at the clock and then to her bag. In an hour time, I only managed to pack half of the bag. Too much of daydreaming. She smiled alone.

“Okay, I’ll come in a minute.”
