Dear Teme,
I love you. I know you’ll hate me for doing this- I wish there was another way. But we can’t be together. I know I said I’d always love you, and that’s true. I wasn’t lying. But I can’t take it anymore. You don’t love me. I thought you’d grow to love me, and I thought I’d be okay with that. With waiting. But I miscalculated. I didn’t realize how much it would hurt, seeing you pine over someone who will never love you. It’s cowardly, I know, to break up with you by letter. But I couldn’t do it to your face. We both know this- I’m not strong enough for that. I-
“Sasuke?”
Sasuke looked up, trying very hard not to look guilty. “Oh, hey Itachi.” He was going for blasé, but he didn’t think he was fooling anyone.
Itachi crossed his arms.
“What are you doing in my room?”
“We’re supposed to meet Kisame and the others.”
Sasuke quickly and somewhat conspicuously crumpled the letter in his hand.
“I know.” Sasuke paused, gathering his nerve. “I’m not going.”
“Why not?”
“I dunno. I just don’t want to.” I don’t need to explain myself to you.
Itachi crossed then re-crossed his arms.
“You can go.”
“Hn.” Itachi’s lightless eyes scanned the room, searching for something. Sasuke wondered what would happen when he found it.
“Do you need something?”
“No. Then let’s go.”
“I said-“
“Sasuke.”
Flinching, Sasuke followed in Itachi’s wake.
Without turning around Itachi addressed his younger brother. “Give me that letter.”
Abashed, Sasuke wordlessly handed it to him.
Itachi had no trouble seeing through Sasuke and seizing his heart. Maybe it was because they were brothers and their bond was just that strong, but Sasuke didn’t think so. It was something far more potent.
He knew it when something seemed to explode behind Itachi’s eyes. It was quick, but Sasuke felt his heart spontaneously combust. And Sasuke thought with satisfaction, You’re wrong, Naruto. He loves me too.
“He’s gone, then?”
“Yes.”
“Ah.”
Sasuke nodded to a question that hadn’t been asked. He was waiting for Itachi to say something.
“Burn it.”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Sasuke did a quick hand jutsu and blew the flames, incinerating the last thing connecting him to Naruto.
*
Not caring if Sasuke would later kill him- after all, wasn't that what people in love were supposed to do? Naruto left. Because Naruto did love the unbelievably gorgeous, unbearably arrogant, insufferable bastard. Naruto had so yearned for the day when Sasuke would return his feelings. But since that day might never come, Naruto would just support Sasuke as much as he could. And he could only do that if he was far away.
Maybe, just maybe he and Itachi had something in common. It came down to luck, really. Itachi had it, and Naruto just didn’t. Blood, it seemed, was thicker than water.
