NHL refs suck....

okay. shawn, kate, beau and i went to the blue jackets/red wings game last night; it was the biggest, steaming crock of bullshit i've ever seen. the jackets should have won 6-4, but instead the red wings tied it at 5-5 with 12 seconds left after blaine angus made a shitty call.

In the final minute of regulation, Vyborny deflected a clearing attempt and the puck struck Shanahan in the mouth. Shanahan went down immediately. As the Jackets cleared their zone and moved up the ice, Cassels slid the puck over to Vyborny -- who had no trouble hitting the open net from the blue line.

It looked as if the Blue Jackets were up 6-4 with 41 seconds remaining. The crowd was deafening -- so much so that nobody heard Angus' whistle behind the play. The goal was waved off because the whistle had come well before Vyborny took his shot.

As the rule goes, when a player is injured the referee shouldn't blow his whistle until the injured player's team regains possession. Although that didn't happen, the referee also has discretionary power to blow his whistle any time he believes the injury incurred is serious.

"That's not a whistle,'' MacLean said. "Brendan didn't dive, but you don't blow the whistle in that situation. That's sad, to take that away from a team that deserved to win the game. . . . (The whistle) was blown because the net was empty, that's why.''

Sanderson: "I can see if it was a one-timer in the eye, but he got hit by a deflection in the mouth. The ref's discretion cost us the game.''

Wright: "(Shanahan) wasn't even down, he was on a knee. It's a joke.''

Shanahan: "I got hit in the face. I spat blood. I grabbed my teeth and wiggled them. I went off. . . . You get a puck in the face, you're going to go down. I can't control the whistle. (If the fans are mad) at me, they can come to the dentist with me tomorrow.''

bullshit. that reminds me of the time lyle odelein (when he was still captain of the jackets in the inaugural season) got hit in the foot with a slapshot during a game. he threw his gloves off and writhed in pain on the ice for at least 20 seconds...and the refs didn't whistle the play dead until the jackets got possession. a lot of the current refs in the NHL suck. they need to be heavily fined or reprimanded somehow, especially when the jackets deserved to win. they really did deserve it...the crowd was into it too, i noticed a lot less red wings fans than i had seen before. the red wings are now my second favorite team, behind the blue jackets. but steve yzerman is still my favorite player.

oh, and before i forget: congratulations to marc denis for beating martin brodeur's record for most minutes played by a goaltender in a season (4,451 minutes for denis)

anyway, i'm at my brother's house right now. i'm watching the dogs until later tonight. i'm on aim right now, if anyone cares to IM me. oh well. by the time people read this, i'll probably be offline. and i'm ranting to myself. woohoo.

and on that note, i'll leave you with what marc denis said to end his post-game speech to the fans:

"My only hope is when I'm standing here with a microphone...twelve months from now, at FANtastic FANale IV...instead of saying farewell, I'll be inviting you to the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs.''

my thoughts, exactly.

okay. i'm out.
