31 - In the Mail

Jul 27, 2006 19:45

Nadia liked to get the mail at Eric's house. The odd government newsletters with who had grown too old for active duty, or had opted to retire. The issue of a magazine about Magicians would come toward the middle of the month. Eric was also about to win a million dollars at least from the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, if he only filled out the millions of forms and stuck the right stickers in the right places. There were coupons for dry cleaning, and lawn repair.

There was never anything for Nadia though. It was almost a relief. No bills to pay, no junk mail to throw out. No credit card company telling her she was pre-approved either. Today though as she flipped through the stack of the usual mail she ran across something in particular that had caught her eye. It was addressed to the current resident, which technically she could consider herself, but the return address was the one that gathered her attention.

Evergreen's of Argentina the address was somewhere in Los Angeles, vaguely familiar, but the handwriting was definitely her sisters. Running her finger along the inside edge the enveloped tore open and a small note was enclosed, with a newspaper clipping.

Found this the other day. I know it's a bit odd to have it, but with all the chaos that happened around the time, I just didn't even think about it. Anyway it is a part of everything that we've gone through, and I thought you might want to at least read it - Syd

Nadia glanced to the clipping and paused for a moment, it was her obituary, which was a bit disturbing to read in of itself. Still Sydney was right this was part of her life, her new one or her old one it was still a chapter in it all. Taking a seat on the couch she drew her legs up beside her and read over it.

Nadia Santos (May 4th, 2006)

Nadia Santos was born in Moscow, Russia to Irina Derevko. Unable to care for her daughter she was raised by her aunt who lived in Argentina. As she grew up, so did her intelligence and desire to live every moment her life gave her.

She studied martial arts and languages at a young age, and was extremely bright as a child. Turning her focus to her country Nadia becomes part of Argentine Intelligence and serves her country well. Later in life she was reunited with her sister, and father and moves to the United States to continue to help the Government assist in any way she can.

Nadia is survived by her sister Sydney Bristow, and Eric Weiss. Memorial service will be held on May 11th, 2006 for family members and friends. In leiu of flowers it has been requested that donations be made to the HelpArgentina Foundation.

Nadia finished reading the clipping and was oddly surprised at how little of her life could actually be printed. She understood that creative editing was required, but it was still a bit alarming to see her life summed up so discreetly. Folding the letter around the clipping she tucked it back into the envelope and sat there for a moment trying to realize that her life wasn't just a few paragraphs neatly edited to remove the ugly parts. Nadia knew that her life was complex, and full of hurt and deception. But she also knew that her life wasn't close to over and in a way it was just beginning.
