So many people seem to have spent today defiantly hiding from the news media. To an extent, I can see why: even the banner ads have been intrusive in a manner heretofore unexperienced. But it's a pity, because there's been some good stuff. The BBC's 911 was magnificent in its first half, and I expect will be no less in the second.
Anyone who's been trying to avoid the things they feared should take a look at today's Washington Post, however, or at least WashingtonPost.com. I've been impressed. Good information, avoiding the gaudy. (David S. Broder, in his 'I'm not an octogenarian yet but I'm working on it' way even talking about how trivial some have made 9/11--see, you can read it to see how much you agree.)
The best bit, though, is a bit by Francis Fukuyama, who now appears to think that history isn't at an end after all.
