I've decided to make an executive decision to stick my head in the sand and ignore it all until I know if it's worth an emotional investment. I get too worked up about comics - I'd rather have a positive reading experience than a negative one. Hence this plan! Which will hopefully allow me to find new (old) good things to read while still keeping in common interest with fandom friends!
I'm trying to apply the method I use for finding good non-comic books: I look a decade or so (or more - often much more) back and ask for recs from people whose taste I trust, use that to find authors or series I like, and never again read a bad book just because it's selling well or marketed at me. Years back, I stopped buying new novels for 12 bucks and being unsure of the wisdom of the investment of money and time; instead I hit up the library or librivox for free and am much closer to assured that I will enjoy the book. It's a system that's served me well so far. There's so much good stuff out there - why should I waste my time and money on things that don't make me happy?
I figure it's time to do something more constructive than complaining.
