Once, Yukimura Failed
Sanada was a brick, Yukimura noticed. He wondered if carrying that Sanada Family Stone around did anything to affect the boy's social outlook.
"Sanada, let's go on a date."
"Hm," Sanada replied. In Sanada-speak, that was a 'yes'. It's what Sanada replies if you ask him to do paperwork for the tennis club or the student council, or if you ask him to come up with the player line-up for the upcoming match.
Still, you can't have everything, Yukimura supposed.
"After practice then," he quipped quite cheerfully.
Sanada nodded before going back to yelling at first years to bend their knees.
After practice, Yukimura took Sanada to the burger joint they frequented. While eating their burgers though, Yukimura thought that it didn't feel quite like a date, since they've been here so many times together before.
Once the fries were gone and their hamburgers halfway eaten, Yukimura grabbed Sanada's elbow and dragged him out the store.
"Y-Yukimura!" Sanada said, through a mouthful of burger.
"Let's eat on the way," Yukimura replied, still cheerfully.
So they finished their hamburgers and their sodas on the way to the train station. Sanada's mouth hung open when Yukimura bought them tickets to Akihabara.
"Y-Yukimura," he said, but the train was already moving.
During the ride, Yukimura looked at the view of Tokyo and smiled. Beside him, Sanada looked at Yukimura's smiling face and shut up about how far Akihabara was.
"Does Akaya know you're an otaku?" Sanada asked, the edges of his lips twitching slightly upwards despite himself at the sight of Yukimura and the gashapon machine.
"No," Yukimura chuckled. "It'll be bad if he suddenly starts talking to me about the latest chapter of Naruto during practice."
Then as an afterthought, he added. "And I'm not an otaku. I just think these little figures are cute."
He opened the gashapon capsule and brightened up at what he got. He raised the mini-Sasuke to Sanada's face.
"Look, he kinda looks like you," he grinned.
Sanada stared at mini-Sasuke's deadpan face and did not see the resemblance.
As they walked further down the street, a pigtailed girl in a maid's uniform came up to Yukimura and shoved her puppy-dog eyes and pout in his face. She smiled cutely. "Please come visit our cafe!"
Yukimura smiled back at her, but Sanada grabbed his elbow and pulled him away. "Sorry, we're in a hurry," he said.
Yukimura laughed. "I was going to say no, Sanada."
"Hm," Sanada replied.
They went to a normal cafe instead, and had cake and tea.
This still didn't feel like a date though. Yukimura sighed mournfully. He didn't think Sanada would enjoy watching that new romantic comedy that just came out... but maybe next time, he'll take his chances and come over to the Sanada household with a DVD in hand.
Sanada liked jazz. Unfortunately enough, Yukimura didn't see what was so good with jazz music.
He sighed again.
Across the table, Sanada raised an eyebrow at him but chose to simply finish his teacake.
They took the train back and even though they could have taken the bus, they walked home instead.
Now this sorta felt like a date, with the sun setting in front of them and the cold breeze blowing past their cheeks.
Yukimura took a deep breath.
It was now or never.
"Sanada, I like y -"
Sanada tripped over a rock.
And fell flat on his face.
Yukimura blinked.
Sanada hastily stood up and brushed the dust off his uniform.
Yukimura looked away and hid his chuckle with a cough.
Swallowing, Sanada looked at Yukimura pointedly. Yukimura nodded, smiling big and mischievous. Okay, he saw nothing. Yup.
"Anyway, what were you saying?"
Then Yukimura remembered what he had been in the middle of saying and his elation deflated. Shrugging nonchalantly, he reached over to brush more dust off Sanada's shoulders. "Never mind," he said, smiling softly.
Sanada nodded at him and resumed walking.
Sighing, Yukimura kicked the stone that Sanada had tripped over.
But then he raised his head, and he saw Sanada's ears and the back of his neck, and he marveled at the redness of it all.
Of course, it may have been embarrassment from falling over or the redness of the setting sun, but Yukimura cheered up anyway and caught up with him.
Then he took Sanada's hand in his own, and thought, okay, so maybe this wasn't a date.
But Sanada also curled his fingers around his hand and Yukimura figured that was alright.
