"AH! Echizen-kun desu!"
There was no doubt to whom that loud voice and overly polite speech belonged. After all, there was probably only one person in the planet who was weird enough to use 'desu' in every sentence. Echizen didn't miss a heartbeat and continued walking, pretending he didn't hear anything, but Dan wasn't one to be disheartened so easily (as Echizen had found out when they had their match in Seigaku a few weeks ago). A minute later, Dan was walking beside him like they were the best of friends.
"Echizen-kun, what a surprise to meet you here desu! Did practice finish late desu?"
Echizen wasn't so cold-hearted that he would ignore someone who was talking to him and was right beside him, so he grunted in acknowledgement and sipped a little more from his can of Ponta.
"Is that your cat, desu?" Dan's eyes were practically sparkling when he peered at the cat walking next to Echizen, looking sleepy and tired and fat. The cat gave him a little 'mew' though, so Dan found it proper to scoop the cat up in his arms and pet it happily.
Karupin purred, happy to be saved from the bother of walking and relaxed against the stranger's arms easily, eager to sleep.
Echizen wondered if it was necessary to teach his cat about not talking to strangers, especially after that scene with Kaidoh-sempai a few days ago.
"He's so cute desu! You must really take care of him desu!"
Echizen looked proud at that. Dan noticed, even if the difference was just a slight upward angle of the lips. "You must really love cats desu!"
"Not really," the other boy shrugged, before taking a sip yet again -- only to find out that his can was almost empty. He frowned. Oh, well. His house was just around the corner anyway. He knew he still hid two cans in the fridge behind the jar of pickles. (His cousin thought he drinked too much of the purple stuff. Pfft, nonsense.)
"Just your cat desu?"
Echizen shrugged, which Dan took as a yes. He smiled brightly at his companion. "Then your cat must really love you too desu!"
Echizen marveled at how blinding that smile was. He blinked the stars away from his vision. "I guess."
"I know it desu!"
"Well..." Echizen started, coming to a stop. "This is my house."
Dan's eyes widened into saucers. "You live in a dojo desu?!"
"Yeah," Echizen shrugged, looking at his cat still nestly comfortably in Dan's arms. "Karupin," he called, but the cat didn't even stir. "Karupin," he tried again, more firmly this time.
Dan laughed nervously. "I guess he's really sleepy desu?"
Echizen almost looked pouty that his cat wasn't listening to him.
"Can I come in desu?" Dan chirped cheerfully. "It would be bad to wake Karupin up desu! And I want to see Echizen-kun's house! Do you have a court here desu? That would be SO cool, desu! Do you think we could play a match desu?"
Echizen caved in. He didn't actually expect that he was going to get rid of Yamabuki's manager that easily after all. And Karupin did seem to take a liking to him.
...and he supposed the match would be interesting.
He sighed. "Come in."
He gave Dan the second can of Ponta hidden in the fridge.
