[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Maruko "Marco" Reiji
FANDOM: Eyeshield 21
CHRONOLOGY: The manga's epilogue. Marco just graduated high school.
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: Screwbite
ALTER EGO: Just a kid trying to get into college.
BACKGROUND:
Son of a former Italian mafia member, Maruko Reiji has taken the idea to heart. His surname, Maruko, is a tad too feminine sounding for his likings, so he opts for the similar sounding, but much more Italian 'Marco.'
Marco grew up in modern Japan. Upon entering Hakushuu middle school, he took an interest to American Football, and as an extension of that, the team's manager, Himuro Maruko. Being two years his senior, Marco was thought of as brave by the other upperclassmen when he started to court her. Her icy heart melted at his charm, but above all, she was inspired by his dedication to the sport. He showed promise, as his ability to sense feints and track the opposing offense was unmatched.
Soon, he and Himuro were an item. Prone to grand gestures, he promised Himuro (who he affectionately nicknamed 'Maria' in courting her) the sunrise after a victory at the Christmas bowl (the high school level national tournament). However, shortly before advancing to high school, he witnessed firsthand the strength of the undefeated champions of Japan he had been warned about. Discouraged, he realized there are two types of teams who tried for the Christmas Bowl: the teams who realized the champions were untouchable and gave up, and the teams who thought they could make it if they tried hard enough, but ultimately were crushed by real genius.
Marco decided then and there that he would be neither. He would lead his team to victory. When he entered 10th grade, Himuro was in her last year, making him realize that this one year was his only shot in following through on his promise of victory. He became desperate and drastic, recruiting a monster of a classmate named Gaou. Marco took the helm and restrategized the team to rely on the new member, specifically, his brute strength. Marco directed Gaou to crush and injure the opposing quarterbacks, leaving the other team crippled for the remainder of the game. Himuro watched this and became disgusted with Marco's tactics, but he remained steadfast, thinking the end would justify his means. She'd come back to him once they've won, he believed.
Ultimately, he fell before he reached the Christmas bowl, essentially bested in his own game of brutality. It's unclear whether his ideas about sacrificing all for the win had changed, but he undoubtedly has lightened up, resigned to train and try harder for next season.
However, before he could regroup, a certain devilish quarterback called him up and coerced him into playing safety on Team Japan, bound to take on the strongest teams from all over the world in a youth football tournament held in New York City. Marco wasn't sure how to feel about this, and soon found himself overshadowed by the geniuses of both the Japanese team and the American team they soon faced. His main goal over the tournament, which he admits is futile, was to keep Gaou from causing too much disaster. In the process, he learned that his teammate is more perceptive about Marco's feelings than he first realized. Gaou takes inspiration from Marco's unheeded climb toward victory, even at the cost of the approval of his girlfriend. This may be a turning point in his ideas about strategy concerning Gaou. Perhaps he sees new paths to victory.
Marco's role in the original canon ends at this point, but it can be assumed he continues playing for his high school as captain and quarterback for the next two years. The epilogue states that Gaou has found a new rival and has come close to defeating him on the field in the subsequent years. Marco is still at the helm of his team, coming close to victory until it is time for him to graduate and move on to college, at which he has to decide whether to continue playing his favorite sport or focus on a career path.
PERSONALITY:
Marco likes to think he is suave and in control at all times, but faced with any sudden event he does not anticipate, a different side comes out. He doesn't realize his internal freak out is quite external as well, giving him a panicked, spastic expression until he manages to calm himself down. Otherwise, Marco is charming and amiable, his good will toward rivals can almost be seen as mafia-esque, giving gifts of cola or flowers as if he expects something in return.
Despite his crafty exterior, he tends to be quite naive, to an extent where he notices it himself. It's always his hope to avoid strong opponents and try and skirt around to victory in other ways, but knows he can never be so lucky. His naivety also fuels his dreaming nature, painting things to be very black and white, cause and effect.
He generally tries to keep peace and order when the atmosphere gets tense, becoming apologetic and even frantic. He is prone to slipping away from conflict when he has the chance, shrugging off challenge, redirecting anger; he can even be seen as cowardly in this respect. He fights with his instincts to run away endlessly, and often forcibly grounds himself with logic, while his mind is screaming scary, scary!!
Despite this, certain goals are hard to shake from him, and he pursues them in any way he can, however unconventional. Along similar lines, romance is prized highly by him. He has stated his philosophy to be: "Toward men, rivalry. Toward women, love." Marco's view of romance is very traditional and hyper-gendered, and anything not along those lines is sure to confuse or disturb him. He sees himself as very masculine, even though many of his interests--fine cuisine, fashion, romance-- may say otherwise.
POWER:
Marco has no canon powers. When he returns to the city, he will regain the power he had in his last visit: shapeshifting into a
Velociraptor. The little creature is highly agile, and possesses nimble fingers and an impressive jump. It stands about three feet tall at the top of the head, and six feet from snout to tail. Marco cannot speak in this form.
In addition to the creature having a dog-like sense of smell, this ability will carry over to Marco while human. He will be able to identify individual humans and track them to some extent. His already keen eye for detail will be enhanced by the power. It will rely on scent, so as long as the trail exists, Marco will be able to follow it (with practice, of course).
