Spice

I wrote this for my Literary Fiction Workshop. It needs plenty of revision.

The cumin hisses and the mustard pops,
as drops of oil jump up and fall back down
to sizzle in the pan.

Jump away before the
droplets hit.

Hiss-too late.

Toss in the onions.

Again, the sizzle,
and then,
the hiss,
due to stirring.

The shhh-thunk of the knife as
the potatoes split and fall.

Stir again.

Kshrrrk

Scrape the potatoes into the pan.
Add the turmeric

and

stir.

Sniff

Stir again,

then lean over the pan and

inhale.

Faint, but still there.
Traces of mustard and cumin,
overpowered by the turmeric.

Stir again

Thunk

Thunk

Thunk

Shake the spoon

Plop

Clatter

Beep

Ten minutes-timer set

Clunk

Lid goes on

Wait

Tap-tap-tap

Tap-tap-tap

The glass is fogged up now.

Beeeep

Beep

Open lid

Sniff

The smell is stronger: pepper, turmeric, cumin and mustard(black, yellow, green-gray, purple-black)-
pure spice.

Haaaa

Home.
