I'm back, full report to follow with a few pics, but in the meantime

Fry & Laurie - Well, I'm sure everyone knows that this is of course, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, who before their individual megastardom were a comedy double act. I love them in all their guises, both together and the individual stuff they're doing now. Their comedy show was called A Bit of Fry & Laurie and it was a sketch show, but beyond that I really can't describe it because they weren't really like anything else. Very intelligent and witty, but utterly silly and stupid and accessible at the same time. Then of course was Jeeves & Wooster which is too brilliant for words and proved to the world that the boys could not only make us laugh, they could act. They haven't worked together for a long while now, though they remain firm friends (unusual for a comedy double act) so I hang on to the hope it might happen (apparently it nearly happened recently when Stephen was in LA but he ended up on Bones instead).
Hayao Miyazaki - Japanese Anime director, most famous in the west for the beautiful Spirited Away, which I personally think is a masterpiece of animation. There is something about Miyazaki's work in particular and all the Studio Ghibli films that just blows me away every single time I watch them. They are achingly beautiful to look at as well as being well-crafted stories and characters. If you aren't familiar with Japanese animation or think that they are all just kids cartoons like Pokemon then I heartily recommend you check out his work.
japanese history - I'm fascinated by Japan, not just its history, but its society, culture, religion, everything. I'm particularly interested in medieval Japan, the Samurai, Geisha but I'm equally enthralled with modern Japan. I own a few katana, although they are just replicas (my most prized possession is one of the official replicas of Duncan MacLeod's katana, which is a real sword) because I admire them both as a symbol of Bushido and as works of art. While I worked at Liverpool Museum I used to spend ages in the Japanese gallery, gazing at the suits of armour, swords, netske and other objects there (when I wasn't in the Egyptian gallery) and I read as many books as I can get my hands on; non-fiction historical books, fiction and texts like the Book of Five Rings. I honestly don't know why Japan captures my attention so much, like ancient Egypt it is one of my obsessions that I can't quite explain.
