Writing Meme - Day One
1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
I was actually pulled into fanfic by a very obscure TV show - Wolf Lake. It aired in 2002 and was yanked before even the first season finished (which is ridiculously unfair, it was a brilliant show). Fast forward to 2003, and I’m in university and I’d heard of this thing called fanfic, specifically slash but I knew there was more to it than that. I’d not been that active on t’internet at that point so I wasn't really aware of what was out there. Still unhappy to learn that Wolf Lake only had half a season, and wanting a satisfactory ending, I went looking for Wolf Lake fanfic and found it. 4am the next morning, I’d read the entire story in one sitting and the next night started to investigate this thing called fanfic a little further.
That wasn’t my first foray into writing though; that came from dissatisfaction with another of my favourite TV shows - Highlander. It may come as a shock to some of you, but I love Richie Ryan and I was devastated when they killed him off (I have one toe in Denial- I accept that he was killed, but I refuse to let that be an end to it).
My first ever fanfic was quite recent, 2007, and it was really only meant to be a one off, a crossover of doom between my favourite shows at that time. It started off as a straight Highlander fic that resurrected Richie and then I started getting bunnies on how I could feed in other fandoms and it ended up being a 52,000 word long crossover between Highlander/Diagnosis Murder(!)/Stargate SG-1/Torchwood/Buffy & Angel/Doctor Who. It was also slashtastic, something that oddly hasn’t featured much in my subsequent writing (maybe I got it out of my system in one go!)
The thing that drew me into Highlander is definitely the infinite scope that Immortals represent - you literally have all of human history (and future) to play with and that offers a richness that only a few fandoms can offer. That and my love for a certain fair-haired eternal teen ;-)
