A Beginning

Sam had her eye on the Ducati for months. Every day on her way into the base she saw it sitting on the lot of a local car dealership. Obviously he’d taken it in trade and didn’t know what he had on his hands - it was a bargain. And yet nobody else had bought it. Sam decided that if it was still on the lot on her next day off she would buy it.

She pulled into the lot and her heart beat a little faster when she saw the Ducati was still there. This was it, she was really going to buy it. She parked her SUV and got out before casually heading toward the bike, not wishing to seem too eager. Despite her feigned nonchalance, Sam couldn’t help but lovingly lay a hand on the tank once she drew close enough to the machine in question.

“She’s a real beaut, isn’t she?” said a voice behind her, making Sam start. She turned around and saw a young, blonde man wearing jeans and a leather jacket zipped up against the cold. He was cute, it was a shame he was so young. Sam smiled and looked back at the bike appreciatively.

“That it is,” she said.

“You want her?” the man asked and although she knew it was the worst thing she could do, Sam nodded eagerly. She looked quickly at the man to gauge his reaction and was surprised to see he was grinning. She threw him a questioning look. “Far be it for me to stand between a beautiful woman and a beautiful bike.”

Understanding dawned on Sam as she realised the man was a customer not a salesman. She flushed a little, embarrassed at her mistake and was glad that it was so cold, hopefully her cheeks were already red enough that it wouldn’t show.

“I’ve been looking at her for a while,” Sam explained. The man held his hand up to stop her continuing.

“Say no more, I can tell love when I see it,” he said with a grin. “Just promise me one thing.”

“What’s that?” Sam asked warily.

“One drink,” he replied, indicating a bar across the road. “I’ve lost the bike, at least let me have a shot at the woman.”

Sam would normally be indignant, but the guy flashed such a disarming smile that she was instead charmed. She laughed and nodded.

“Okay, but only one. Let me pay for the bike first though, okay?”

The man nodded and stepped back, waving one arm in the direction of the lot’s office to allow Sam to pass. As she did, he fell into step beside her.

“By the way, my name’s Richie,” he said and held out his hand. Sam took it and smiled.

“Sam.”

“So, Sam, what do people do for fun around here?”
