Old Dog, New Tricks

“So, where are the buttons?” Duncan asked, carefully examining every facet of the sleek black rectangle in his palm. Methos rolled his eyes and snatched the device from the Scot.

“There aren’t any. It’s touch screen,” he replied and demonstrated by opening a book and then turning the pages with one finger.

Duncan looked agog.

“For heaven’s sake, Duncan, you’ve got that iPod I got you last Christmas. The principle is the same, just for books!”

Duncan just nodded mutely. He couldn’t bring himself to admit that the player was still in a drawer somewhere, battery dead and the only songs on it the ones that Methos had loaded before giving it to him.

“Honestly, you’re such a Luddite sometimes,” Methos said and raised the corner of his mouth in amusement.

“I was not! I was completely in favour of mechanising the mills.”

Methos scrutinised him for a moment and Duncan guessed he was trying to decide whether he was joking or not.

“Things have moved on and now you can carry an entire library in your pocket. If you can learn to use this,” Methos said, thrusting the reader under Duncan’s nose for emphasis. “This is the future, Mac. Think of the Padd in Star Trek,” he added.

Duncan sighed.

“Fine, show me again…”
