“I had never been to Pittsburgh before I came to Pitt. You don’t know much about the city at home[in NEPA]. All I knew about it was that everyone who came down here loved it for some reason. Which I couldn’t understand, because its Pittsburgh, you know? But now…*looks around at stadium, skyline* .. I get it. I love it too.”
-Keaton Carr, 2004 abington heights grad(and vball player) at Pirates game last night.
I miss everyone from home. A lot. I managed to see everyone in May and June a bunch of times, but I haven’t seen anyone (except Joe) since July 3rd. Which is why I will be coming home Saturday night, Aug 12 till Tue, Aug 15th. I would love to somehow squeeze camelbeach and knobles in there, so we’ll see. I’m pretty excited.
While I do miss everyone at home, I’m loving it in the city. A bunch of pathfinders and I bought pool passes so we’ve been hitting up the schenley pool a lot after work and such. One of my friends made the comment that showing his pool pass made him feel like a real city resident. It was odd, but cool at the same time: I live here.
When Jon and Joe were in, TP, Erin, Cara and I had a cookout/played bocce on the hill in schenley park with my grill.(oh, for those who don’t know, Cara and I broke up a little while ago. Things are still fine between us, we are definitely friends, we just both agreed that we weren’t going to make it as a couple in the long run) Anyway, being up on that hill, grillin with a view of the cathedral and campus, and the city and rivers, it was awesome. That, combined with the recent trips with pittstart parents to station square and its fountain shows, and the Pirates games, and the movies in the park(Top Gun!) and just living here in the summer, makes me upset that people who haven’t seen the beauty of the city firsthand are so quick to have a negative opinion of it. I did, too, before I came. That’s why I have that quote up top. Almost everyone does. Its odd, but now I can’t understand how I ever thought this place could be an ugly, or uninteresting, or unappealing place to live, of which it is none. I feel frustrated that I can’t share firsthand my experiences with everyone who isn’t here. Alex says he feels the same about his current experience in isreal… and in Pittsburgh. Oh well.
Anyway, last nite’s Pirates game was a blast. It was sold out(not expected at all by us), but some guy gave us free tickets(right place, right time I guess). It was being touted in the papers as”the last chance to boo Bonds”, as he might not play in Pittsburgh again(he’s a former pirate). And boo we did, and he didn’t reach base ever, and left men on base as he got the 3rd out in 3 different innings. It was perfect, and though I dislike him, it was still cool to see Barry Bonds. Saul won the pierogie race(if you don’t know, don’t ask), and we won 3-0! Fireworks capped off a great night.
This weekend is looking promising, with two free concerts tonight(povertyneck down at the point, im skipping trisha yearwood to see the spin doctors play in shadyside), then other fun stuff is planned that involves water and food. Yay.
Hope everyone else is having a great summer, and I’ll either see you in two weeks(yay!) or when school starts(yay for you, boo for school).
