I think we're totally on the same page. The only times SPN really 'bothers' me (even then it doesn't... I just kind of think lolwtf but I still enjoy myself) is when the characters do something that seems contrary to who we know they are. And even then, with enough thought and fandom-spinning, it's possible to make everything justified--and if you're not willing to do that kind of work or don't think you should HAVE to, well, I suppose I can see why Show would be disappointing in that regard.
Gee, you know what? Thank YOU.
Seriously, I sometimes feel like I am doing something wrong just by loving the show and actively wanting to keep loving it. I can almost always find a way for things to make sense to me because I WANT them to. And whenever I do this throughout a discussion with someone who wasn't that happy with an episode, I keep hearing the "well I'm sorry if I'm not one of the everything-is-perfect-and-happy fansresponse. It gets to a point where I am actually glad when I truly dislike something just so I can prove to myself that I AM capable of criticising and disliking certain parts of the show. (and after watching "Fallen Idols" I am pretty sure I am). It just really takes a lot for me to be disappointed and unhappy (the 'meh' feeling is much more frequent though) - just like you said, there's almost always a way to make things justified. That's why meta-discussions are such a wonderful thing :)
