It occurs to me that not everyone watched Buffy. So here are some things you might want to know about Spike, because he's one of those people who's not all in the writing.
Basic stats/Appearance
Spike is a vampire. He's over a hundred years old, having been turned in 1880 at the age of late-20s. Though his look has changed over the years, currently he's sporting bleach-blond hair slicked back and a leather duster that's more or less ubiquitous. He's got a scar over his right eyebrow. In general he's very trim and fit, short-ish and not at all bulky but defined.
Vampire Stuff
As a vampire, Spike requires blood to live. This allows him to move about and have sex and all that good stuff. It also means his body temperature is that of the surrounding air, though muscle movement and recent feeding will warm him up. He has better-than-human hearing, smell, night vision, strength, and speed. He's generally resistant to telepathy and mind control (but we can explore that). He has no heartbeat, and that's a clue for those who should be able to hear one.
Other Features
Spike speaks with a "lower class" London accent. This is adopted, as he grew up "properly," and spoke with a Received Pronunciation accent. It's okay to perceive the put-on-ness, but only if your character has a very good ear, as he's been speaking this way for long enough that it's not really put-on anymore.
Spike tilts his head a lot. A lot. To the point where it'd probably make more sense for me to specify when he's not. He also does a thing with his tongue I can't describe, sort of a behind-the-teeth roll thing.
He also smokes, and enjoys food though vampires aren't supposed to do that, either.
Basic Traits
Not to go into a lot here, but my basic concept of Spike is as a romantic anarchist. He's constantly rebelling against authority, while loving life and the world and wanting it to remain as it is. He enjoys destruction, but he needs a place to do that in. He's also highly motivated by his feelings for others, oddly as he is a vampire and is not supposed to have them. Basically his regard operates as his conscience, and his motivations boil down to what he thinks is best for those he loves. At this point, that's Buffy. He loves absolutely and obsessively, which can also be read as simple lust but again, motivates some higher emotions.
His default manner is impatient, snarky, and both volatile and devil-may-care. And one of his most consistent traits is inconsistency--he'll say one thing one day, and another the next, as suits him, and is prone to saying/doing exactly what he announces he's not going to. Impulse control problems, FTW.
Basically he's a bastard with a heart of poetry, Badass Decay in spades.
The Chip!
When played from Season 5 (
betenoire_rp), Spike has a chip embedded in his brain which delivers an electric shock when he attempts to harm a human. It seems to respond to intent, so under special circumstances violence may be possible when it is not intended to actually harm. But most of the time, Spike can hit non-humans, but humans are safe. This means he subsists on a diet of bagged blood.
The Soul!
When played S7 and beyond (
zodion), Spike has no chip but does have his soul back. This means that he's got a moral compass that's not Buffy, though it doesn't mean he's a different person (unlike Angel/us). He's not going to make the "right" choice all the time, but he does have a conscience.
