I love this analysis of Lana. Love it. So often on the show, she's characterized by who she's associating with either dating-wise or friendship-wise and I love how you've thrown out that, yes that happens but then cut through it to show Lana Lang how she is - and who she is (fandom aside) is really of her own choosing. And that is, as you said, worth chering for.

Thank you so much! It was a challenge to try to sort her out when the canon is so conflicting sometimes, but I'm glad it all came together. I just wish I had been as clever as you and come up with quotes for each section, that was brilliant!!

I enjoyed this essay very much (even if the only parts of Smallville I've ever seen were the bits at the end while setting up my DVR to tape Angel *g*) I figured it was time to broaden my mind (and have discovered I'm addicted to essays). But, I seem to have somehow formed the impression that Lana was a mermaid? WTF did I get that idea?

Anyway, thanks for the well-thought out interpretation.

Yes! In the original Superman story, wasn't Lana Lang a mermaid?

No that was Superman's other girlfriend Lori Lemaris. He met her in college.

Wonderful sweetie *kisses*

I think you voiced what TPTB try to show us, but sometimes don't really achieve.

My secret to Lana Lang? Work from the scripts instead of the performance. KK sometimes rises to the occasion, but the character's *mostly* consistent on the page. Mostly. :) THank you so much for reading!

Terrific essay, Hope.

I really love that you used the Tori Amos song to describe Lana as that's been a "Lana song" in my head from about midway through S1.

Shamefully, I must admit, I had no idea Tori had a song by that title! I was just playing on the theme of her belonging, but I'm glad that it evoked a positive for you!! Thank you so much for reading and commenting!

Oops. The song is Everybody Else's Girl (or at least that's the chorus lines I remember), and I thought you'd borrowed from it for the titles. But it's still very muc how I think of Lana, particularly "she's everybody else's girl, maybe one day she'll be her own."
