Great essay! I love Quark too. Usually I don't like the comic relief of a show (for example Neelix in Voy) because the characters are silly or have little depth, but with Quark the writers achieved the perfect balance between comical and serious. And I wouldn't say he's ugly ;) He can pull off wearing Ferengi fashion without looking silly! (On the other hand I might be that compared to Starfleet uniforms, Ferengi fashion isn't really that bad...)
I agree with it all, except that I don't see his relationship with the nagus as you do. I don't see a father-figure. I think it's greed that makes Quark do whatever he wants - greed, and a respect for Ferengi tradition.
I was always glad they didn't try to turn Quark into a fake human.
Oh, greed and a respect for Ferengi tradition certainly is much of it, but in Body Parts, when Quark thinks he's dying, and someone anonymously buys his remains, he jumps to the (wrong) conclusion that this is the Nagus; there is a pointed dialogue with Rom on the subject. I don't have my DVDs with me, but I think it goes something like:
Q: He likes me. R: He used you, brother. I don't think... Q: But don't you see, he used me because he likes me. But of course he couldn't say it, so now he does this!
I'd say that shows he wants the Nagus' approval out of more reasons than greed and respect.

I have such a hard time with them, I think, because how do you sum up such three-dimensional characters as Sisko or Josh Lyman in a couple of pages? Guh.
That essay was brilliant. I remember when I used to quote one of the rules of Acquisition said in Bar Association, something about family members being the rungs on the ladder to success, don't hesitate to step on them. Hah.
I enjoyed how you highlighted Quark's many facets. He is certainly one of my favourite characters because of these and many more. I was also intrigued by how you showed Rom and Nog's development as well.
Thanks for that, it was great to read and thought-provoking.
