Bruce Wayne is our innocence; Batman is our disillusionment. They are our angel and our demon as one.

Ahhhh very nice. Well done. Thanks for this.

Thank you very much, kita!
I'm so glad you thought the essay was well done, and that you liked the closing lines so much too :)

There is no Bruce Wayne

Yes, yes, and yes! That was a perfect way to open the essay. I completely agree. I'm doing a Bruce/Clark essay at the end of this week for ship_manifesto. This is one of the main things I was going to point out in comparison of the characters. How Superman is the mask that protects Clark Kent and all he loves. While Bruce Wayne is the facade that protects Batmans and what he cares for ( ... )

You're writing the Bruce/Clark manifesto? Woot! I didn't even know the pairing had been taken! Can't wait to see what you come up with, and for your Clark/Superman essay :)

Yeah, I'm doing the Clark/Bruce essay. It's supposed to be posted on Sunday. So check for it then.

I'm still waiting to hear back from them about my doing the Clark essay.

Aww!!! Thank you for all your awesome feedback, Clio hon!

I do love that juxtaposition between Clark and Bruce. The way the masks are reversed, and the alter egos and disguises are flipped.

While I believe that "There is no Bruce Wayne", I believe it in a very vague and general sense. I think there is no concrete Bruce Wayne. The case could be made that he does not exist at all, and there are times that seems plausible. However, I too think he is not entirely dead. He definitely is disassociated from himself. Having Clark and Dick in his life gives him a mirror to hold himself up against--the same but opposite--and it provides the yin to his yang.

Becoming Batman definitely saved him. You are absolutely right and you have many great points here! Your Bruce/Clark essay is going to be amazing, babe! You've got these guys down so well!

I'm glad I could be of some inspiration for you to do that, hon! Thanks again for all your comments!! :)

Just wanted to say wonderful job on this essay! As much as I'm all about the World's Finest pairing, I agree that Dick and Selina are the two people that have had the most impact on Batman as a character, the two we remember best. Love what you say about Bruce Wayne, who might be dead or a ghost or in hibernation. Great manifesto!

Agree that Bruce Timm's Batman is fantastic. In fact, this was the Batman to which I first imprinted, not the campy 60s live action series, even though I saw that first. No, the toons are what shaped my understanding of Batman, the Justice League, and the DC verse at large. I'm still loving it to pieces :)

(One little thing: Your link to the DC Fic Index is incorrect. If you check, you'll see you've got extra quotation marks that make the link bad.)

Thank you for all your wonderful feedback, scrollgirl hon! I'm so glad you thought my analysis of the character and the relationships rang true!

Bruce Timm's Batman was awesome! I grew up on the 60s series, never knowing any better until Burton's movies. Burton is pure genius--love him and loved his Batman! And I thought the animated series was a great way to keep the revolution on Batman's image going, bringing it back to what it is meant to be :)

P.S. Thanks for pointing out that the DC Fic Index link wasn't working. I fixed it right away :)

This was a wonderful write-up of a very complex character. As Smallville continues to lead me towards disillusionment, I find myself more and more drawn to the dynamic of Bruce and Batman. I love your final line there about Bruce is our innocence, Batman is our disillusionment. I've also found myself sucked in by the latest take on Batman and Superman by Jeph Loeb, simply because it continually highlights their differences in...well, everything. I adore that contrast and I particularly enjoy being torn between their two perspectives.

There are just no words for how excited I am about the upcoming Batman film, because everything I've read going into it leads me to believe that Nolan may finally strike that perfect balance and find someone who's as brilliant a fit with Bruce Wayne as he is Batman. And it amuses me greatly that he found that fit in an American psycho. *g*

I'm so flattered that you included Gotham After Dark in your recs. Thank you for that and thank you for a great essay.

Thank you for all your lovely feedback, Wendi sweetie! I'm very happy you thought I did Bruce/Bats justice with this essay, and that you particularly liked the final line.

I've loved Batman for a long time, but The Bale is making him an all-out fangirlish obsession! Sexiest Bat Ever!! LOL! And I cannot squee enough about how incredible he looks--in the role and in general--for the movie! Batman: Begins is just going to blow me away! And oh God yes, is it ever hysterical that the perfect American Psycho makes the ultimate Batman!! Patrick Bateman is so Bruce! Hell, drop a letter from his last name, and you've got Batman right there--LOL! LOVE The Bale!!! :)

I had to include Gotham After Dark! You did such a lovely job with it, and it incorporates so many great main characters while embodying them all so well! I particularly enjoyed your Selina :)

That was perfect! sarahjane12 November 24 2004, 02:04:36 UTC
Oh Lexalot, only you could write such a fantastic essay on Bruce!

I don't even know where to start. You've captured Bruce in such a perfect light and you've explained who he is in such perfect words. Because of this essay I have a much better understanding of him.

Reading your Bruce in the gotham journals is always fun and I know how much work you put into that project. I think you're the person who knows the most about Bruce that I know.

I can't wait to see the movie and I'm eagerly waiting it! I remember you saying the Bruce in the movie resembles your Bruce, so I'm looking forward to seeing him on the big screen!

This was a fantastic essay sweetie! You did an amazing job!!

Thank you so much for all your awesome feedback, SJ sweetie!!

I'm really glad that this essay gave you some deeper insight into who Bruce is and helped you understand him more! What a lovely compliment!

And thank you for your compliments on my work at The Gotham Diaries too.

The Bruce in the movie is eerily like what I envision when I write Bruce--it's scary!! It has me so incredibly excited to see it!! I know it's going to be the coolest movie experience I've had in a long time!!

Thanks again for your comments, babe--I really appreciate them :)
