I really enjoyed this. :-) It gave me a lot of food for thought, especially the idea that Harry's and Sirius's roles reversed in OotP, a concept I never really thought much about before. Thanks for writing such a thorough analysis!
Thanks for commenting. I spent a lot of time, even before writing this essay, trying to understand why Sirius changed so much from GoF to OotP. Having a character fulfill plot needs and still remain a consistent person can be difficult. JKR seems to have leaned toward the side of plot requirements with Sirius in OotP because she didn't spend as much time as she might have demonstrating the depth of his misery at being in Grimmauld Place after having already been a prisoner for 12 years. But it does make sense to say that Sirius is regressing while Harry is evolving.
What a lovely contribution to the discussions about Sirius! This is so well-crafted and the analysis is so thoughtful that I don't have much to add (or take issue with). Your piece really is the definitive statement on Sirius (taken alone, as an individual), for me.
Like Gina, I found the discussion of the ways in which Harry develops in ways that takes him "beyond" Sirius during the OotP to be very original and thought-provoking.
And your list of readings/links is very thorough. Thanks so much for sharing this with us all!
Terrific work! Sirius is a contradictory and confusing character, but there appears to be a strong character arc in his life story...somewhere. Thank you for summing him up so succinctly and completely (and unbiasedly!).
Would it be possible to include a link to the Sirius survey somewhere?
Thank you for your kind words. The unbiased part was the hardest. Sirius is one of those characters who brings out strong emotions -- and readily provokes fierce debate.
As I suspected, you not only participated in the survey, but you were the first person to do so. Anyway, here's the link if you'd like to take a look at the results.
