i still keep thinking back to st. petersburg. the best time so far. the best people. we haven't really met a gang like that since. we've been pretty much on our own.
i spent my last day walking the streets with my old man. we came across an old russian typewriter, smashed and abandoned on a cobblestone path by a river canal. i told patrick how much i loved typewriters and that i needed to take some photos. after lying on the path and taking some pictures, and with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, patrick proceeded to take out some kind of pliers from his pocket and began tinkering with the keys. he was at it for awhile and he came up with the russian letters for j & p and a bloody hand. probably the most endearing thing anyone has ever done for me.
right now we are in sevastopol, ukraine. it's the naval base here. all the men here walk around in uniform. it was the roughest train ride yet. 19 hours of pure hell. we both got top bunks, and not together. we were forced to lie down in a coffin like space where it was fucking stifling. i could not breath, i was sweating, and the bed itself was high off the ground and only my width. sound fun? yah, i totally didn't sleep at all. but we are in a hotel here, in a really ancient building. it's beautiful, and only the price of a hostel. we will stay here to recuperate from last night. there isn't much to do here but walk around. it's pretty and it's along the black sea. and it's finally sunny!! i forgot to mention earlier that we have had nothing but shit weather since lithuiania. rain everywhere. sevastopol is beach town, but when we arrived it was shit. we took a nap and when we awoke it was clear, sunny and beautiful!! kate is convinced the bad weather that is following us is god smiting us because i interfered with a married man.
onward to odessa soon. i'm hoping for some locals here in the discos. i've heard some promising things. as in the hiv.
elsten, our swiss friend from st. petersburg is supposedly going to be in odessa when we go. i'm super stoked on that. he is a really good kid and super fun to party with. kate and i are just desperate for other travellers to go out with.
i saw the raddest shirt yesterday in kiev. it said "welcome to ukraine" and had babushka dolls on it with super mustaches. if you've seen "everything is illuminated" you know why this is genius.
i can't wait to get away from the russian language. it causes us grief.
