Link Knut's keeper dies
The Berlin Zoo keeper who reared celebrity polar cub Knut after his mother abandoned him has been found dead in his flat.
Knut the polar bear cub was rejected by his mother, Tosca, shortly after his birth in December, 2006.
The Berlin Zoo decided to hand-rear Knut and keeper Thomas Doerflein became the cub's surrogate parent.
Doerflein kept Knut alive in the beginning, staying with him for 150 days straight.
The zoo's controversial decision to raise Knut made the cub an instant celebrity. Huge crowds came to see the twice-daily "Knut shows".
Eventually Knut grew too big to play with and last November the zoo cut all contact between the bear and his adored keeper.
Sadly, Doerflein was found dead yesterday. There were no signs of any foul play and so far no indications he committed suicide, police said.
ETA: German news on SBS TV said he died of a heart attack, aged 44.
Hopefully that means it wasn't suicide, but I still imagine the last year must have been very hard.
