BREAK THE SILENCE! HOLD POLICE ACCOUNTABLE!
DEMAND OPEN INVESTIGATION INTO
POLICE HANDLING OF EVIDENCE!!!
On January 13th, 2006, Police Chief Hambleton announced that he had
asked the DA to start a criminal investigation because of "procedural
irregularities" in the handling of evidence. As it turns out, an
officer in charge of the evidence room was helping himself to heroin
on a regular basis.
Meanwhile the Police Review Commission (PRC) has conducted NO
INVESTIGATION because the police provided NO INFORMATION to it.
If a reporter was able to find out the facts of the case,
why can't the Police Review Commission?
The public has a right to know if a cop has tampered with evidence or
if drug convictions have been compromised. The public has a right to
know what went wrong with the system that a heroin addict was allowed
to carry a gun and handle evidence that could put people in jail for
years? We need an open investigation into the effects of this cop's
crimes and a policy discussion about how to keep drug enforcement
officers from becoming drug addicts. We need access to public records
for the PRC and the public!
