Yule Tube

First off, thanks to dontlikeyou for inviting me to join him at this evening's Crazy Christmas 2010, that which we had wanted to watch, but I fell behind on buying the tickets for the limited R21 shows, and they sold out like hot cakes. So this evening's complimentary tickets were a pleasant surprise and some compensation, though no consolation that we missed the adult shows by a day.

With the festivities as the anchor, it could have been a nauseating overdose of goodwill, but with Selena Tan, Hossan Leong and Mr Miyagi in the driver's seat, there was perhaps hope that the usual dose of irreverence and irrelevance would be injected with a heavy hand.

It would be amiss to credit the show without mention of the stellar and amazing cast, possessed of exceptional pairs of lungs and sets of pipes to carry off the grandstanding and showboating segments. It was at once gospel meets broadway meets big band as the individual acts improvised on the theme with a lot of talent and a pinch of humour.

Perhaps the funniest moment was when Pamela Oei played a vampire bat who was secretly afraid of the dark and wanted out of Halloween by migrating to Christmas, if only Santa Claus would accept her application. Filled with corny moments warranting rolling of eyes, her deadpan delivery rescued the act by imbibing it with an earnest likeability.

Singing wise, it was R J Rosales who had the audience eating out of his hands. Starting a simple Tagalog song, he segued into a soaring and impassioned "O Holy Night" which had the house hushed in awe. When he crested the meoldy and brought it back to the Filipino refrain, the applause was freely forthcoming.

Local accapella group Vocaluptuous made a guest appearance, their harmony of projection as mesmerising as their performance. The show ended on a high with a dedication to the HIV/AIDS movement, the company united in their stand and support of the disease. How apt, this time of the year being about loving and caring.
