[LJ2ME] When Pigs Fly

Apr 28, 2009 22:20

Perhaps the winds of change were brought about by the Sumatran Squall that blew into town and left in its wake considerable damages last Wednesday. Shortly after this ominous ill wind, the Pandora's box was unleashed upon the world.

Having missed it back in 2003 when I was away in the UK while the country and region were in the grips of the virulent SARS outbreak, I guess it's a case of when-was-the-last-time-you-did-something-for-the-first-time with the Swine Flu now rearing its head and making inroads across the world.

With this mutated strain more unpredictable than SARS, the WHO is in damage-control mode as they try to preempt and prevent having a pandemic on their hands. Already worldwide initiatives have been stepped-up to deter and detect and defend against the outbreak. Locally, the Health Ministry has already issued circulars to handle and deal with the situation.

With things coming to a simmering boil over the weekend, the week opened with hastily convened meetings of the upper echelons to discuss possible scenarios and action plans. These were put into action and effect but it was just a mild start where and when it developed overnight into full-on arrest mode where this morning was mish-mash helter-skelter activity as ad-hoc plans were thrown together to establish a semblance of screening and surveillance at the workplace.

And we'll be wearing scrub suits from tomorrow. So much for looking stylish on the job. And as I've experienced before, I think I'd sooner die of asphyxiation for having to breathe through the impermeable and impenetrable shield that is the N95 mask than of whatever influenza strain...
