[It's a beautiful day, and the air seems to have a calm serene sense to it. In her dream, Yuffie is outside in a large garden in Wutai. She is dressed in a kimono, which is green and gold, colors which suits her perfectly ( Read more... )

[He couldn't remember how he'd gotten here, or where he'd come from, but he knew he was painfully out of place.

Everything here was perfect - like some sort of dream - but not the sort of dream he belonged in. This place was foreign, and he was an intruder, sullying something that should have stayed clean and pure. He was too rugged and rough around the edges for a place like this. Next to the exotic beauty of the garden he was suddenly standing in, he felt shabby in his dirty, black suit with his messy, tangled hair.

He knew he wasn't welcome here; it was all wrong for him, and he had to find a way out. They looked rich and too elegant for the likes of him, but if he asked the ladies in the kimonos, maybe they would tell him how to get out...]

[Any other time, her mind would have jumped at the sight of him. He had to be a Turk, for the way he looked. But she didn't, this time. She smiled.]

Are you looking for someone?

[She managed to remember to ask in the language of the mainland - he had to be a Mainlander, right?]

[One of the ladies spoke to him. At first, he couldn't understand what she was saying. She was speaking in some foreign language...or maybe it was a language he could understand. Maybe it was both. Before he could figure it out, he found himself answering.]

Uh.

[Apparently, he was just as eloquent around pretty girls in dreams as he was in real life. The one who had spoken to him was more than a pretty girl, though. She was...angelic. This really much be a dream. Girls like this didn't exist in real life, did they? He could have sworn she was actually glowing.

Maybe he was dead. Did that make this place heaven? Not that he'd know, but he'd always pictured heaven a little less...exotic.]

[Even in her dreams, we never promised Yuffie Kisaragi would have developed tact.]

Hey, I said, "Are you looking for someone?"!

[She asked again in Wutaian, just to be safe. Luckily for him, Yuffie had the amazing ability to walk in those Planet-cursed-sandals she hated in real life, and walked gracefully over to him, almost expectantly.

But then she threw a glance over her shoulder, as if to make sure the woman who was not quite her mother hadn't disappeared as easily as she had come.]

Uh...no...

[He scratched his head awkwardly. He was interrupting something, he could just tell.]

I uh. Dunno how I got here. Or uh...how to get back. [Not that he knew where he was trying to get back to. For some reason, his memory fuzzy up until just a few minutes ago.]

Oh man, that's really weird. I mean! Ah! I'm sorry, that's super lame for you, but people don't just randomly have amnesia or anything.

But welcome to Wutai!

[She flashed a grin, like it was something she'd been waiting to say proudly for as long as she could remember, which was pretty much true.]

We're an Independent nation, but I'm sure you know that, right? I mean everyone knows that.

[She savors the world. Independent. It needed a capital letter, it felt so good. She almost wanted to cry she was so happy.

The woman who was not quite her mother says something in Wutaian to her, telling her she'll be back later, or something. Meet the nice mainlander and show him around.

..Why does her own Wutaian suddenly feel so rusty in comparison?]

I'm Yuffie Kisaragi! It's nice too meet you.

Uh... [He smiled. Suddenly, it didn't really matter that he couldn't remember where he'd come from or why he was here. He was in Wutai! That's what mattered. He'd always wanted to go to Wutai.]

I'm Diego. [He held out his hand, smiling brightly. It felt strange, actually, like he didn't usually smile like this, or introduce himself by his given name and an offered hand. None of that seemed to matter either, right now.]

[She took his hand and shook it.]

Diego, huh? I like it. Anyone we can call up and tell them that's who you are, so they can come rescue your pretty face?

[Yuffie was teasing him, she laughed. Her dream self was super smooth, oh yeah.]

I dunno why you'd want to leave though.

[Grinning like an idiot didn't even begin to cover the expression on his face. She shook his hand, and unconsciously, he didn't let go.]

Nah, nah, no way do I wanna leave! It's so nice here, and I dunno who to call anyway...

[Apparently, he'd already forgotten about feeling out of place.]

Hey, you're, uh....

[She decided to let the point go, and let him hold on to her hand. She was pretty amazing, after all, anyone would love to hold the hand of the Great Yuffie Kisaragi.]

It's great here, isn't it? I love living here. You know, I'm---

[She stopped. Okay, enough bragging. She never bragged about that in real life, either.

Maybe she should start.]

The Princess of this country.

[Her expression relaxed from a childish grin to a much more refined smile, as if her posture were responding to the weight of the title.

Man, she was gonna have to remember this for when she woke up. She felt important.]

[She could have told him anything at that point, and it would have been music to his ears. He would have been just as fascinated and impressed no matter what she said, but he was pretty sure she couldn't have said anything much better.

A princess.

No wonder she was so shiny.]

A princess, huh? Wow... Don't think I ever met one've them before.

We're a pretty rare breed, ya know.

[And Yuffie's ego just expanded, as if it wasn't big enough already.]

What about you? Remember what you did?

Me? Well...

[He frowned, trying to remember. What he did...wasn't something he wanted to talk about. It wasn't the kind of thing princesses should have to hear. He did bad things. Maybe.

He let go of her hand, suddenly feeling like someone like him shouldn't be holding hands with a princess, and shrugged.]

Nothin' special. Tell me more about you!

[Well he let her go, finally. Not that she meant it like, "Finally", of course! But, just, you know, it was surprising.

What else could she say about herself? She was a ninja! Yeah. Only, wait, no. She wasn't here. She never had to be a ninja. Because everything was okay. No necessity.]

I trained in martial arts. I could probably kick your ass.

[Yeah, that's real princesslike.]

Really?!

[He seemed way more excited by this idea than he ought to be. If he'd been awake, he would never, ever had let any girl tell him she could beat him up.]

That's so cool!

[Apparently when he was asleep, Yuffie being stronger than him was just about the best thing ever.]

I know, right?

[Oh, Diego you are not helping Yuffie's ego at all. She nods vigorously]

Oh yeah. Dad's amazing, so, you know, I just learned. Natural talent.
