[YGO] One Shot - Until Then

Aug 26, 2009 23:52

It was dark, and just a little cold... and for once Weevil had begun to miss the comforts of home. Eyes falling closed as he pulled the small scrap of an excuse of a blanket around himself in the small queen-size cheap hotel room. It smelled like booze, vomit, and another smell that he wasn't sure he even wanted to identify.

The foul stench of cigarette smoke seemed to be burned into the pillow below his head, causing him to gasp for air. The asthma that plagued him threatening to close off his breathing if he tried to sleep any longer than the attempted few minutes... Quickly he sat up, hand over his glasses-free face as he attempted to find some kind of fresh air to breathe. His hands fumbled around for his inhaler, but it was nowhere in sight. His head was spinning, hands desperately groping the bedside table before he began to choke.

Just as he thought he was going to pass out he felt a hand giving him a firm shake, barely even registering that Rex was even awake before the younger of the two forced the elder's inhaler into his hand. Shakily Weevil inhaled the airway opening spray, breathing a few slow times before gripping his throat.

"...You really should keep your inhaler by your side of the bed you know." The brunette beside him stretched, giving the back of his two-toned head a scratch before moving to get up. "Want some water or something?"

"...Sure..." The Insector stood, keeping his inhaler close to his chest as he walked toward the window, peeking out the ragged curtains with a look of distaste. The neighborhood was far from what he considered 'desirable', but at the moment it was all that the two of them could afford. They had used all of their mutual winnings on plane tickets, train trips, boat rides, even subways and buses were familiar with the duelists' faces.

He was sick of it. Sick of chasing after someone that he had no hope of beating. Sick of being defeated time and time again and losing something closer and closer to his heart each time...

First, his perfect winning streak. Then, his Queen, and even worse... Rex's pride. He had lost all of the things that had kept his life as a duelist going.

"......Uh... Nevermind on that water, Weev..."

"Huh? Why...?" The teenager turned, face faulting when he was presented with a glass filled with a transparent brown liquid... ".............." He felt a little sick at the thought of possibly having to take a shower in that the next morning...

"Hey, Weev..." Rex looked over the glass a moment with disgust before walking toward the broken-down sink in the corner to empty it's contents down the rusted drain. "You think that your new plan will work?"

"Of course it will, Dinobrain!"

To be honest, he wasn't quite sure. He didn't want to put Rex through anymore unnecissary grief, but his pride as a duelist just wasn't letting up. He had to get his revenge.

Against both Yuugi Motou and that blond bastard he calls a friend... Not that Weevil was jealous of their close friendship or anything. He knew that when worst came to worst Rex would run. He would do the same if Rex was ever in a bind that could end up getting them both hurt...

...Right?

...Again, Weevil wasn't quite sure. Would Rex run? Would Rex leave him to die if they ever got into that situation?

"Whatever, Weev. It better work, I want my damn Red-Eyes back!" He threw the glass across the room, the teal-haired teen watched it crash across the floor with a grimace. Even without his glasses he could see the rage on his friend's (he supposed that was the word...) face. Though even he could tell that it wasn't about the Red-Eyes anymore, it was something much deeper, much more personal... Joey Wheeler had taken away his everything. His title. His chance. His ride to the top.

Weevil knew that Rex needed the money... that he wanted to get to Duelist Kingdom for more than just the fame that would have came from winning. He lived alone, got money in the easiest way he knew how that didn't involve him selling himeslf on the street...

Dueling.

It was his meal ticket... it was paying for his education (even if Rex neglected his studies a little more than he realized.), as well as his rent.

Weevil respected Rex. Yes, Weevil had grown up in entirely different circumstances from his only friend, having had money since before he was born with quite the small fortune that he was the sole heir to piling up in a foreign bank account... Nearly everything had been handed to him since the time of his birth. He never even had to try...

Until he met Rex two years ago... and battled him 'just for fun' between battles during the first tournament he had decided to duel overseas from his American home and learned all his tricks. Learned the Raptor's strengths, his tricks, and of course, his weaknesses. He used the time they had spent together to his advantage and had won the tournament... Weevil was in it for the fame. Sure, he was rich. Yes, he was intelligent and went to a prestigious school. Of course, everyone knew his family and what they did...

But no one knew him... No one knew or cared to know him.

Until Rex.

Only Rex seemed to stick with him, despite the hard times, even if it was just under the excuse of revenge... but for once Weevil had really begun to enjoy himself outside the walls of his father's mansion. Only after meeting Rex did he truly begin to appreciate what he had, and realize how lucky he was for having such an easy life.

...He wanted to help him. Weevil wanted to help his friend... no... his only friend fulfill his dreams. To make his life easier, even just the slightest... would make losing his grandmother's Insect Queen worth it.

So until then, until Rex was happy; he would continue to chase after the 'champion' and his friends.
