But Kyouya is always there when Kyouya needs to be, so he's there -- leaning in the door frame, his own PCD in his hand. He looks as unruffled as he always does, but there's something odd in his eyes -- this place is hell and no one belongs here, much less people like them.
But he pushes himself off of the frame to turn Tamaki's PCD over, so the camera and the screen is off.]
Asking stupid questions is a waste of time, Tamaki.
[But even Kyouya can't put the right amount of dismissive irritation into his tone. Something is missing.]
[Kyouya opens his mouth slightly, to dismiss Tamaki's fears. That's normally his job, right? To just -- have an answer.
The problem is that Kyouya has no answer. Not a legitimate one, anyway -- and while Kyouya is certainly comfortable with lying through his teeth with a smile that would charm Queen Elizabeth II into giving him her kingdom, he certainly isn't comfortable with lying to Tamaki. Not over something as serious as this.
[He isn't addressing the issue because Kyouya has absolutely no idea how to address the issue. So Kyouya does what Kyouya does best -- ignore his problems in lieu of something he is actually good at.
Not that it -- ever works, properly, but it will at least distract Tamaki for a few minutes.]
I have located a set, within the clinic. It's worn, but it has all of the pieces, and it looks as if no one has played it in quite some time.
[He's quiet for a moment. There really is no fix for this, is there? They're really doing to have to wait it out, watch people kill each other and keep track of the casualties like it's an every day occurrence.
[Precisely. It disgusts Kyouya -- because even though he's more than willing to bend his moral rules for certain things, there are some things you do not do. Mindless slaughter is certainly one of them -- but Kyouya can't fix it here. Here, he has nothing except his intelligence and a knack for making connections. He lacks any and all monetary connections that could make some amount of difference.
So, until Kyouya figures out how to fix it, it simply does not exist.]
You're going to lose regardless.
[Almost airily, as Kyouya gestures slightly for Tamaki to follow him to another room, where the chess set is waiting.]
The odds of you beating me in chess are so astronomically small that it's almost cruel.
Th-That's cruel! [He's right on Kyouya's heel. It's a little like a safety net, though he doesn't consciously identify it as such. As long as Kyouya is nearby, it's just another day. They aren't murdering people outside; all his neighbors aren't lying in bed infected and waiting for Usagi-chan to rush to their aid.] You don't even know how good I am!
I don't have to know how good you are to know that you're going to lose.
[Kyouya slides his hands into his pockets as he walks. Remaining aloof and unattached to the situation is far easier than getting himself involved in the emotional mess of it all. It's far better to keep Tamaki entertained and distracted for as long as possible until Kyouya can figure out how he can deal with all of this.
It's only then that he can help Tamaki deal with it.]
You don't have the attention span to make it through four rounds.
[Though Kyouya's first assertion is 100% correct, he knows. Nobody beats Ootori Kyouya at chess. That doesn't mean Tamaki can't try. Just like when Ootori Kyouya figures out his strategy for Adstringendum. It'll be another game. It will. Just you wait. Tamaki just has to be patient.]
The higher your hopes, the harder the fall, Tamaki.
[Kyouya will allow him five rounds of easy maneuvers, at the very least. Perhaps more, if he feels kind -- but there is no way in hell Tamaki is going to win.
Because then Tamaki would figure out that Kyouya is just doing this to make Tamaki feel better, and that simply cannot happen.]

Kyouya...
[But then his expression contorts - teeth clenching, nose scrunching, complexion feverish, eyes glazing over with not-quite-shed moisture.]
What else is there?

[Oh, Kyouya. Tamaki already knows. But he would totally kick your ass if you let him win. So it's all good.]

[Shut up -- Kyouya is never nice. Ever.]
