FIC: One thing differently (1/?) HIMYM AU

One thing differently

Ted looked up as his wife entered the bar, flashed her a grin and then returned to his notes.

"Hey honey," Lily said, giving him a brief peck on the cheek before pulling out her phone.

"How did it go at the gallery?" Ted asked her, his arm automatically encircling her shoulders.

>For a second i was TOTALLY confused...

If I don't get people's brains leaking out of their ears during this fic then I won't be doing my job. :)

>now I'm just intrigued/curious. WRITE MORE! This is totally new and I'm dying to see where this goes!!!

Indeed. It's interesting isn't it? I honestly think that Ted and Lily work surprisingly well as a couple. He had the potential to be a pretentious douche of a philosopher. She wanted to be a painter. They are more of a match than Lily/Marshall in some ways. And there was that kiss (or not) in How I Met Everyone Else.

Barney is obviously a photographer. Do we even need to go into that one? ;-)

Marshall being a Lawyer without Lily's influence could easily have turned into a suited-up Barney-figure. I think he's the most interesting to write.

And Robin... well, what would have happened if Robin Sparkles had been a success and eventually Robin had got into the music business behind the scenes?

I think it all works! I hope it does anyway.

>I'm surprised you didnt bring in him going to nicaragua, or becoming a granola!nutritionist or something

Oh he did it! He was in the peace corp. That's where he got into photography - he wanted to document the injustice! He's a complete hippy. You just don't see it quite in this part of the story. But think Extra Crispy Barney and you're there. I just had to bring him back. :)

>yeah and I can def see marshall as a douchey lawyer... hello, "gorilla"

Definitely. But Marshall's a lot cuter than Barney was/is - a little less hard-nosed about it.

Bizarro world! That was hilarious - love the way the voices are instantly recognisable even though everything else is different. It is hard to imagine Barney not being his usual awesomely successful self - though with his travelling and new toy he can't be doing too badly (or is it all going to the alimony?)

Very intrigued about the Ted jealousy of Lily/ Barney - you never get feeling that Marshall has even the smallest concern about Lily's friendships with Ted or Barney, interesting!

Please write more, would love to see where you take this.

(ps. very excited - only joined LJ today so that I could vote in the BarneyRobin awards, this is my first post!)

Heh, your tidbits have definitely got me yearning for more!

Yep, thank goodness for the awards - have been really impressed with the ideas and the writing that's on there! From there I have bookmarked a couple of sites and (apologises in advance for gushing) I have to say I am really impressed with your prolific writing, even when it makes me cry - where do you find the time?

I plan to spread the constructive criticism (read:gushing) in the new year - that is clearly a better NY's resolution than the usual methinks!

I'm so glad that the awards are working! It's good to see some of the amazing fics being honoured. There's some unbelievably talented people out there.

>I have to say I am really impressed with your prolific writing, even when it makes me cry - where do you find the time?

Aw, shucks! Thank you!
I've found the time recently through having holiday season downtime from work and also having a nasty dose of flu (who'd have thought that would be inspiring?) But you'll see my fics dry up a little in the new year when I'm back to work!

Concrit is *always* appreciated, believe me. :)

>I like where this series is going. This AU is pretty intriguing!!

It's a plot bunny that wouldn't die. I've tried about five or six ways to write it in the past and it's really, really tricky because there's a lot of exposition to juggle with trying to give the characters a voice and yet make it clear for the reader. It's pretty tough. But the concept just won't leave me alone.

>I forsee ECBarney in the future ;)

You know that I love him. Any excuse to shoe-horn ECBarney into a fic and I'm gonna grab it. :D

>Your status is awesome too :)

I love that one too. And it's reminding me that I've not yet posted any Robin bits! :)

My braaaaaaaaain!!!!!!!!!

I think it's really interesting not only that the characters have gotten what they said they wanted, for the most part (Lily and Ted spring to mind most as this), but that it's made them all completely different people. Ted is Marshall, who is Barney, who is... what, Granola Barney? How are they all still friends in this AU?! Why is Marshall so Barneyish? And Robin and Marshall? And Ted and Lily?!? *makes incoherent confused sounds that don't really have a spelling*

I really want to see how this develops (and where it all came from). Did they all turn out better? Worse? Not better or worse, but just different? I need to know!

>>My braaaaaaaaain!!!!!!!!!

Took the words right out of my mouth. ¬.¬
I can't think of much else to say besides that and "QUUOOOOI?!" lol. I was thinking I would take a picture of my face with the exact expression I had after finishing this, since a picture is supposedly worth a thousand words and that might be more effective than anything I could type, but then I realized that I shouldn't make you guys suffer looking at my hideousness. :P

Idioticonion, my dear, I love you and your mind-mashing mad skillz. More, please!

That's one thing you can always expect from me - weird mind-mashing skillz. I practice them. In the bath. :-D

Very, very cool.

snooty!Ted as philosophy teach, I can totally see that. Lily never having given up her art, likewise (how sad was it that when that couple bought her paintings, they did so for the frame).

Barney -> Peace Corps -> Boheme!Photographer makes a lot of sense as well.

Sparkles -> Exec, I can see that too.

Marshall is Marshall, except it's now he who's channeling the Barnacle vibe.

Does this mean we'll see Marshall pick up women as "Ted Mosby, philosopher"?

Sleeze!Marshall: "That jacket photo, just a stand in; I can't stand the lime light. Married to famous artist? Noooo, that's part of the biography stub my publisher made me put in there, it's fiction."

Hehe. I don't know. I think he'd probably think that "Photographer" is a little more cool. If somewhat ironic. :)

God, can you IMAGINE the jacket photo of Ted for his book? I bet he's still wearing those decorative spectacles.

He'll also have spent three hours at least getting every single hair in place *just right* :-/

Honestly, they don't come more metro than Ted. I think they broke the mold after him.
