Star could see that John Connor was dying. Her breath came faster in her throat, her small lungs heaving as she watched him fight. But he'd had a four foot piece of metal impale him from back to chest and they all knew that he wasn't getting out of it.
"His heart can't take it."
Star pursed her lips and shook her head, screwing up her nose as Marcus leaned forward. She knew what he was about to say. Surely everyone knew.
"Take mine," Marcus said, quietly determined.
Star waiting for the protests, waited for everyone to step forward and stop him. She waited for Kyle to object. No one spoke. Everyone seemed as mute as she was.
"It's no good..." John coughed, crimson-laced spittle decorating his lips. "Your heart has been genetically modified. It's too big. It runs too fast. It would kill me." John looked over at Kate for support.
Star gaped as Kate nodded her head, as Marcus pushed forward. "No...no John Connor cannot die."
But John Connor certainly looked like he was doing a really good job right then. Kate held on tight to his hand as his eyelids fluttered. "Oh no..." She said, one hand on her swollen belly.
Star wanted to speak. She wanted to explain that the way forward was so clear. But it had been too long and her throat was too dry, too closed. She tugged at Kyle's jacket.
Then John Connor finally died.

"This is John Connor, and if you are listening to this then you are the resistance."
Star nods her head. John Connor is a title, not a person. John Connor is the leader of resistance. And now, John Connor is a machine. Star had sat, un-noticed and quiet as Marcus has listened to the Sarah Connor tapes. She'd listened as Marcus made his first radio broadcast as "John Connor". She'd sat with Kyle as they'd recovered from a swift and vicious revenge attack from the machines.
She'd overheard Marcus and Kate talking.
"You really think a human could beat them? Could have ever beaten them?" Marcus said gently.
Kate shook her head, holding back her tears. "I suppose you have advantages, John," she sighed.
Marcus smiled. "Indeed."
And then Star knew that they'd been truly saved.
