It's been months since I posted any hip hop so I thought this extreme night of procrastination would serve as a good opportunity to do so. To be honest, my knowledge of and tastes in hip hop are pretty basic. My favourite artists (which are pretty much the only ones I really listen to) include The Roots, Common, Kanye, A Tribe Called Quest, US3, k-os, Cypress Hill, Outkast and Black Star. There's a lot of great artists out there that I know of and have heard some of but I never get the chance, seemingly, to really get into them.
What makes up for this, however, is my luck. Every so often, in one of my many hunts for good new music, I'll come across some really good rap/hip hop. I find a lot of it actually but let's just say there's a reason there's so many "strugglin' MC's" -- a hell of a lot of them suck ass. Especially the white ones. Maybe it's just me but 9 times out of ten, the white MC's voice is so whiny and annoying sounding that I'd probably laugh if I could even bare to keep the song playing.
Recently, one of my most respected online musical guru's, Steve Marchese of Scissorkick, came across a wicked new project in the making from Brooklyn called Deaf In The Family. The project is a collaboration of a bunch of NYC's local DJs, producers and emcees that are putting together an album called For Those About To Rock -- a rehash of classic rock tunes with new hip hop tracks cut in very nicely. Sounds sketchy? Then let the first mp3 here prove you wrong. An awesome re-working of Neil Young's "Southern Man". The second is also fairly cool; as you guessed, it's The Who. Head over to
Scavone's MySpace to hear one more track off the CD -- wicked hip hop over a flawless "Little Wing" and "Come Together" mash-up. Yummm.
