In starting to keep track of word-counts by spreadsheet (submissions are made easier by having a reference of all this in case the magazine doesn't accept such a length or whatever)...
Digression. (Let me sum up.)
In keeping track of numbers, I've discovered the short stories I'm really content with, the stories I feel are whole all range around 10,000 words.
I've always struggled with going over in terms of length with shorts. As I notice this pattern though, and realize that some of my favorite novelists write short stories I like that are pretty long, I'm beginning to wonder if that's just my pace.
