CD: switching it up

I received a special assignment for character design! I'm supposed to emulate the style of UPA [reference: Gerald McBoing Boing]. WEEK ONE WAS A TOTAL BOMB. I don't ... quite understand the style yet. I AM NOT DISCOURAGED THOUGH. I know it will come to me, I just have to keep drawing and drawing and drawing until it does! My personal sketches are a bit better; mostly because I spent two whole evenings after I had already submitted my homework just practicing the way necks join into the body 6o9. NEXT WEEK I get to draw inspiration from Samurai Jack. Holy crud why have I not seen this show before.

All these exercises were shape ones! We drew shapes first, then made them into things.

[I actually lied on that last one; I saw Reggie first <3]

Oh and one semi-turn around! Our discussion topics for character design are so strange! Sometimes it's like ... an intense evaluation of subject matter and other times it's "draw this! Have fun!!!"

I ended up with some really cooky things this week. That knight cracked everyone up. HECK, HE CRACKED ME UP slkjfff it's the mustache, he reminds me of the knights from Monty Python and the Holy Grail XD;

So we had to collect reference from a list and then create a character from said reference! I picked "vagabond" and there were a bunch of adjectives that went with it [sad, smelly, angry, dirty, tired]. I think he's a bit lonely looking, really. Eeeeeeeeehn ;^;~

I SHALL CALL HIM HENRY! Henry Saffarow, yes, this sounds good.

Most of these were preparatory sketches, where you can see me trying and failing to capture some of the essence of UPA's shape and style. Like I said, I don't really understand it yet -- it will take some concentrated effort to break out of my current style and into something else! And I was reminded too that anatomy doesn't have to be 100% correct. AAAAH THIS IS SO STRANGE; I have had "anatomy first, creativity second!" hammered into me so much in school that I'm a bit timid in exaggeration! I'M PRETTY EXCITED THOUGH 8D
