Funny, oldest son and I had a conversation about writing last last night. Not as profound as yours but about structure and characterisation and stuff.

And you're absolutely right - daft fan stories about 1970s kids telly are terribly illuminating - as well as fun to write.

I gain so many benefits by writing them! Being able to bluff my way through conversations with 'real' writers is just one... although I have to be prepared with a quick and bland reply when they ask me what I write... and one of these days I just know I'm going to say 'gay porn', although I am trying to save that one up for just the right (i.e. very wrong) moment!

Yes, the fact that alot/most of the plots lead up to gay porn (well not exactly porn in my case, more like physical activity) is a really interesting factor. Much more challenging than if we were simply writing het sex all the time.

I've actually been trying to make Kai angier in this story - another one that was just supposed to be what happened after The Marriage Feast and has now taken a completely different turn (how does that happen so often?) - but despite my best efforts Kai has just ended up being a utter star/stud/marshmallow. The man certainly deserves more than fruit (amd me writing about it)
