Ants

It had to come... they are the inevitable next step after woodlice and worms.

I'll try to keep it short.

The anthills in the garden are starting to wake up in the spring sunshine, their inhabitants busily trundling around moving tiny bits of earth from one place to another, seemingly at random but always with a common purpose. Given enough time, those minuscule crumbs that they carry will build up into a substantial mound (to the horror of my perfectionist neighbours, but adding extra interest to summertime games of croquet) in which they... do whatever it is that ants do when they are not carrying stuff...

It struck me that those of us who choose to follow obscure fandoms are a bit like that too. Constantly scouring the web and the real world and the canon for tiny crumbs of information and bringing them together, building up a community in which we... do whatever it is that fans do when they are not researching...

It's amazing what you can do with tiny crumbs, whether you build an anthill or a whole imaginary world.

I wonder whether the ants find it quite as satisfying as we do?

research, imaginary life, ants
