Nothing ever works out as exactly as you planned it to. But it is our ability to accept the challenges that present themselves that truly defines who we are. I've been reading a bunch of Chuck Palahniuk books lately, and as twisted and odd as his books are, they have also given me a lot to think about. I am well aware that since March I was pretty stuck in my own past, and lately I've been doing what I can to get myself out of that sad place. And Palahniuk has a lot of interesting revelations when it comes to life and the past. I think a quote that struck me the most was this one:
"When you understand that what you're telling is just a story. It isn't happening anymore. When you realize the story you're telling is just words, when you can just crumble it up and throw your past in the trashcan, then you'll figure out who you're going to be."
We can't live our lives continually retelling the stories of our past. The past contributes to who we are, so by no means should we forget it, but we can't get hung up on all the should-haves and would-haves. This is something I'm slowly starting to realize. Thank goodness.
And amen to your statement about the Kobe Bryants of the world. They should be no one's hero.
