Pet peeves # 3 You don't get to hold my bank card prisoner

Jan 25, 2005 14:46

I haven't got 1 and 2 out yet but this is definitely in my top 3 so I'm starting here.
I recieved some unusually bad service at a bar last evening, and when I went to pay the bill for my friend and I, the waitress tucked my bank card under her arm until the the interac call went through.
Now, let's just pretend that I have a million dollars in the bank, does that mean because I want to pay for a $25.00 bar tab, that some minimum wage waitress who I hope doesn't have a criminal record gets possession of ALL of my financial worth until she's satisfied I might not run away.

I think it's assuming a bit much to Take possession of a card I am solely respoinsible for. After all It's not likee I transferred ownership of my card temporarily to the ditz that kept bringing me ice in my drink despite being asked not to with each round.

One million entrusted to a minimum wage employee who can't remember no ice?

She actually tucked my card under her arm and turned her body sideward to shield it.
How crass!

What if she has a few at once and gets them mixed up, like she did with our order.
What if I forget to reclaim it from her when there is a long lineup after I've been drinking.

The real problem is the petty little power trip that comes along with the delusions of false importance staffmembers get as they start to imagine that lives are on the line and everyone is a threat.

I have been a waiter myself, and can readily point out this is not a slam on wait staff overall.

In fact I bought a shirt once and the guy at the cash went and took my bank card and placed it way on the other side of the till out of my reach. I said "What are you doing? That's my life savings in there, give it back."

I recognize the concern for security but I despise the arrogance and distorted little power game that goes on with interac protocol.

I can promise you this much the next person who thinks they "OWN" my card while purchase something is in for a very noticeable reaction, and I encourage you to do the same.
