I'm not sure how many of you have Krogers in your area, but that is the main place I do my grocery shopping. We eat a lot of chicken breasts (doesn't everybody?), so I try to stock up when they go on sale.
After keeping track for several months, I have noticed that Kroger seems to put their chicken breasts on sale (usually about half price, or $1.97 - 1.99/lb) about every 4-5 weeks. With this in mind, I usually try to buy enough chicken on sale to last me for that time period. This way, I never have to pay full price!
For us (a family of four, although the baby isn't eating a lot of table food yet), I generally buy 3-4 big packages of chicken. Each package usually has about 5-6 chicken breasts. When I get home, I immediately trim the chicken (cutting off any remaining fat, cutting huge breasts into smaller pieces, separating the tender from the breast, etc.), and I put recipe-sized portions into individual freezer bags. Most of the time, I will just put 3 breasts per bag, because that is enough for dinner and leftovers for us.
Sometimes, I will even pre-cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces for using in things like
gumbo,
blackened chicken caesar salads/wraps, or
sweet and sour chicken.
I'm guessing most grocery stores have a similar rotation of sale items. Are there any tips you can share for shopping sales?
