running pride

Today I went running and tried to push myself more than usual. Robert and I ran together twice over the holidays, since neither of us is familiar enough with the other's home town to go alone, and our last run was short so we pushed ourselves to go faster. Apparently this has inspired both of us, because today he took 4 minutes off his usual time for a 5.5 mile route, and I took about 5 off of mine for 6. That means my pace was under 8:20 min/mile, which is pretty awesome for me, given that my usual is more like 9-9:30, and my occasional unusually fast run is around 8:30-8:45. (The only real race I've done was a half marathon, and that was at an 8:57 pace.) So this might be a personal record.

This might also be the motivation I need to start working on speed, after concentrating on overall mileage this year. It would be super exciting to do a sub-8 minute run, or even to get my regular times down below 9. I'm not going to do it every day, but maybe once a week or so? Might make going to the gym on Long Island more interesting - I think I'll have to shell out for a membership for the first time this winter because if it's icy, the roads won't be safe for running.

Oh yeah, happy new year, everyone.
